Officers of the Maryland Transport Authority Police Dispatch and Response can be heard stopping traffic and inquiring about crew members working on the bridge before it collapsed, in an audio recording released.

A container ship struck the bridge that had "lost their steering" struck the Key Bridge, crumpling almost the entire structure in the water.

Governor of Maryland Wes Moore said on Tuesday it was the quick thinking of workers and police that saved lives when the ship steered towards the bridge.

The collapse had left six workers missing, who are now presumed dead.

That one officer is lucky his back up didn't arrive sooner. Sounds like he was planning to drive out onto the bridge to get the workers once that happened and he'd have probably been lost as well.

It's actually crazy how fast they were able to react to that potential threat.

Thank you to all public service workers for doing what you do every day

The loss of six lives is absolutely still tragic but considering the scale of this devastation, the number of additional lives saved is likely in the triple digits.

Rip to those workers, lost some badasses to be able to work on a bridge for a living.

That is amazing, talk about being on the ball. So sad to hear of the lost workers.

Kudos to those quick thinking folks, this could have easily been so much worse.

How terrifying for road crew to go out like that with likely no notice..tragic spectacle that happened too quickly

In maritime shipping, all kinds of breakdowns happen, as in this case with the Singapore container ship. Where there is a large movement of sea giants - container ships, to pass difficult or dangerous sections (bridges, narrowing of the river and other difficult places), groups of wet tugs should be on duty for safer passage of difficult sections of the route.

Can’t even imagine if this Happens during the day 😮

I'd say as a minimum one lesson to take from this is that big ships should have mandatory tug escorts until clear of any vulnerable structures when transiting any port.

This is causing others to start questioning whether bridges are safe from cargo ships that need to pass through. There will be plenty of fear for daily crossers. I read somewhere that at least 30,000 vehicles use this bridge daily.

It’s not unusual to have our local bridge traffic slow at night due to road workers fixing pot holes etc . Never even considered a scenario such as this happening . Terrifying! My condolences to the families & friends of those lost in this tragedy.
