Oli Pickles is the owner of iDoctor, a repair shop for all things phone- and tech-related. Customers will bring in iPhones that no longer charge or have dust-clogged speakers or dirty interiors. Part of the repair process for these iPhones is a thorough deep cleaning of each hole, speaker, charging port, and screen. Oli uses small metal picks and brushes to remove tiny pieces of debris out of 4 different phones, making them look brand new.

If he's so disgusted by touching all the gunk, why can't he simply wear thin rubber gloves?

Been doing the same thing working as a technician in a Apple certified retailer. A great way to finish up the job is to use some form of cleaning putty for the bottom speaker grills and top speaker grills; you can get rid of the left over gunk

I cleaned out the charge port yesterday. It was incredible how much came out. Before I did it, it wouldn’t charge unless the cable was in the perfect position. After cleaning it seemed brand new and the charger clicked in

I used to work at a second hand phone retailer, cleaning peoples phones was the best part of the job! So satisfying! I miss doing it

After it started to become increasingly difficult to get the charging cable into the USB-C port on my Android Pixel 4a phone, and thus to charge it, I was able to resolve the issue with a sewing needle. After turning the device off I was able to use a fine sewing needle to fish out all of the lint and compacted debris at the bottom of the charging port, after which it became easy to plug in and charge the phone. This is a task that you need very good close up vision to accomplish, as I'm short sighted, fortunately just taking my glasses off gives me extremely good close up vision.

Being able to give our phones a second life to reduce waste is such a blessing 🙏🏻😊♥

Thank you so much for this! My charging port had been getting clogged, but I couldn't see inside well and I didn't want to tinker with it and damage it further. But after seeing a professional just stick a tiny metal object inside the port and clean it out, I felt confident to do it myself. I cleaned out way more lint than I had expected, and the port works good as new now! Can't remember the last time I felt that satisfying snap when I plug my charger in!

Mine isn’t as bad as what is shown here, but the speaker grilles and and charging port are starting to accumulate a thin layer of detritus. I’m going to try and find a way to clean it out so I can preserve the longevity of my phone.

I never could understand how someone could let it go so bad instead of cleaning it from time to time

No idea how people look at their phone like this and are okay with it

What about AirPods? What’s the best way to increase the volume and restore the microphone? I’d imagine it’s even worse than an iPhone when it comes to dirt and grime.

I've had two instances of tech support with this problem, one was pocket lint, the other was a small bead like from jewelry.
