Geology of Parowan Gap Utah / Where an Ancient River Carved Through a Mountain as it was Formed

Join me to drive through a geologic wanderland, Parowan Gap , Utah in the Red Hills just outside Parowan and Cedar City , Utah. On the tour we will see fault lines that created the Basin and Range, an exposed thrust fault from the time of the dinosaurs that raised mountains 1000's of feet, and speaking of dinosaurs, we will see three different types of tracks, one incredibly rare, and we will see where an ancient river carved through a mountain and the indigenous people left their marks.

  • Really excited about this one. As a young geologist this was a common place for field trips and I am so happy I get to take you all here with me on this adventure.

Thanks for the great video. I live about 20 minutes south of here and now know a lot more to annoy my kids with next time we visit the site!
  • As a geology student I will willingly hold out on watching this video before field camp to make sure I look at the geology objectively and try to figure out what is going on with little help. Will be back to this video in a few years! Thanks!

Great video! I live 40 minute away and been there about 20 times and yet learned more from you than the information they provided. You Rock!

I get reminded of the Barwon River ... in 2011 I went on a 1 day sampling trip with my professor to visit the Barwon heads haha

What a fascinating tour— thank you! I’ve visited the Parowan Gap in the past, but I clearly didn’t do it justice. It’s back on my to do list now!

WOW what an amazing adventure. The tracks the petroglyphs. Just incredible. Have you been to Oregon? Or Idaho near Craters of the moon? Thank you for taking me along. ❤

Garrett, Seeing the landscape through you eyes adds a whole new dimension to this area. I drew many dinosaur pictures when I was little and always enjoyed visiting The Museum of Natural History in N.Y.C. Their Dioramas of the past were amazing. Rik Spector
  • I love the Earth and Time shirt! Those dinosaur tracks are really cool. Love the petroglyphs. Utah never disappoints! I really don't have an answer to if the historical era graffiti is vandalism or not. I think it comes down to how old it is and what the intention was of the person who made it. It is definitely vandalism if it is modern... but from the 19th century?... hard to say...
  • It always intrigued me how the river just cut through the ridge instead of following the ridge creating a canyon the slices a drainage ridge!! Weird!!

Reminds me of the ancient Red Beds haha but also ancient Basalt Hills in Victoria hahahaha
  • @spikenomoon
Mt St Helen’s blew in 1980. If you go there you will find a 20 million year old Plateau. Also a seven thousand year old canyon.

Glyphs there is cool. Rode my bike through it!

  • Is Helper Utah on the edge of an ancient caldera? Stay at the RV park. Look around. What happened to create that landscape. I want to know!
