Lyrics

There's a man I meet, walks up our street
He's a worker for the council
Has been twenty years
And he takes no lip off nobody
And litter off the gutter
Puts it in a bag
And never thinks to mutter
And he packs his lunch in a
Sunblest bag
The children call him
Bogie
He never lets on
But I know 'cause he once told me
He let me know a secret about the money in his kitty
He's gonna buy a dinghy
Gonna call her Dignity

And I'll sail her up the west coast
Through villages and towns
I'll be on my holidays
They'll be doing their rounds
They'll ask me how I got her I'll say, "I saved my money"
They'll say, "Isn't she pretty?
That ship called Dignity"

And I'm telling this story
In a faraway sea
Sipping down raki
And reading Maynard Keynes
And I'm thinking about home and all that that means
And a place in the winter for dignity

And I'll sail her up the west coast
Through villages and towns
I'll be on my holidays
They'll be doing the rounds
They'll ask me how I got her I'll say, "I saved my money"
They'll say, "Isn't she pretty?
That ship called Dignity"

Stand it up, stand it up, stand it up, stand it up, stand it up, stand it up
Yeah, stand it up again, stand it up again, stand it up again, stand it up again
Stand it up, stand it up, stand it up, stand it up, stand it up, stand it upYeah, stand it up again, stand it up again, stand it up again, stand it up again

And I'm thinking about home
And I'm thinking about faith
And I'm thinking about work
And I'm thinking how good it would be
To be here some day

On a ship called Dignity
A ship called Dignity
That ship

These songs from Deacon Blue have huge meaning for me. At that time I suppose I was switching from childhood to adulthood. I was in a difficult place. It was a tough time for me. But I made it. To anyone else struggling, there are better times ahead. Struggling makes us stronger. Hang in there.

  • The members of Deacon Blue are some of the worlds most fascinating and beautiful people...and of course massively talented.

My brother sadly passed away at 43 yrs old. He's been gone 3 yrs and used to sing this on karaoke all the time. I'm only here because of him.
  • Absolutely incredible. I have no other words to describe this. Brilliant. I’m done.

Coming out of a thick heavy rock phase my newly found work mates were listening to Raintown in the 80s and god what an album! it’s still with me now and this track in particular, coming from nothin and owing a boat that folk seem to love on the rivers always makes me think of this song! Life impertinent art? Absolutely cracking song what ever! Shout out to Shaun Roberts, Jonny Hatton, Tony Dow and Paul Groundwell

I love these songs. I once got mistaken for Ricky on a train from Newcastle to Carlisle when I was about 19. I confess I played up to it and my compartment (yes it was the late 80's early 90's and trains from Newcastle to Carlisle still had compartments) filled up with your admiring girl fans. I was good I promise...
