For first-time visitors, Rome can seem chaotic and confusing, but there's a surprisingly compact center and you’ll be able to do much of your exploring on foot. Most sightseeing in Rome is concentrated between the city’s main transport hub, Stazione Termini, in the east, and Vatican City in the west. The Vatican is one of Rome’s most awe-inspiring areas and contains two must-see attractions: St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums’ Sistine Chapel. The Historic Center (Centro Storico) occupies the right bank bulge on the River Tiber, opposite the Vatican. We’ve divided the area into the elegant northern half which includes Tridente and Trevi Fountain, and the bustling southern section, which includes the old Jewish Quarter. Directly south, the Colosseum and the Forum anchor Ancient Rome, along with the village-like Monti neighborhood. North of Center, Villa Borghese is ideal for recharging your batteries. The more distant southern neighborhoods of Trastevere and Testaccio are a little divorced from the main sightseeing trail but are popular nightlife and foodie hubs.

I just got back from Rome and stayed at a hotel in Celio, 3 blocks east of the Colosseum. There were good restaurants nearby. Termini is known to be seedy. In fact, I avoided the area as a 73-year-old woman traveling solo.

Stayed at the Hotel dei Mellini in November , perfectly placed and very quiet with loads of restaurants a few minutes away. Great staff and really nice rooms.

  • Wonderful, thank you. I stayed at a charming B&B very near the Vatican; it was booked through the Rome B&B Association in 2000. Hope to get back there again.

We stayed at My Extra Home apartments in Monti, wonderful experience. Short walk to the Coliseum one way, Trevi Fountain the other.

Nice, just booked first 5 nights in city rights at the center of Vatican and Colosseum etc.. It's hostel since I'm going to be out all day anyways. On other hand I'm planning last two days to be on nicer place on coast or some beautiful location outside the center to wind down after probably walking everywhere for almost a week ;D
