Confidence Man
with Maggie Haberman

How does a man like Donald Trump—simultaneously hailed as an all-American hero and condemned as a harbinger of the end of American democracy—become not only a cultural phenomenon, but the president of the United States? Maggie Haberman, the New York Times reporter who won a Pulitzer Prize for her coverage of the 45th president, offers insight into his background, his motivations, and the true nature of his personality, not to mention the means by which he gained a seat in the Oval Office.

Maggie Haberman, a senior political correspondent for the New York Times and a political analyst for CNN, is the author of Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America. David M. Rubenstein (moderator), co-founder and co-chairman of the Carlyle Group, is the author of How to Invest: Masters on the Craft and the host of History with David Rubenstein on PBS.

Trump is a genius at one thing: Leveraging the vast untapped stupidity of America.

Greatest conman of all time. Such a huge threat to world peace and American democracy.

Gratified to hear Ms Haberman confirm pretty much everything I’ve thought and felt about Trump. He epitomises every ugly aspect of American culture and none of its better nature. I find everything about him to be revolting.

Why is Maggie the only journalist that can cut through trumps bullsh? She states the facts and sticks to them. No drama, just honesty.

You've probably heard the Sinclair Lewis quote, 'When fascism comes to America it will be draped in the flag and carrying a cross'.

Never in the history of our democracy has such an ill suited person been elected to the Oval Office. Totally disgraceful, vengeful, narcissistic behavior that so denigrated the office and our country’s standing globally. Holding my breath until November 2024

What a shame NYT buried at least 5 negative stories about trump in 2015.

DJT never met a despot of dictator he didn't admire and envy.

Learning to be a con artist when he was young , lies and dumb as dirt

That crowd when he came down the escalator in 2015 were paid extras. I talked to someone who worked it. They got paid for half a day.
  • As a girl I was a babysitter, including infants. I've changed hundreds of diapers. As a model, I met Trump many times: he frequently had the smell of poopy pants.

Though I didn't learn anything I didn't already know, this was a super summary of "how we got here". Clear succinct answers, great reminder of what an awful person/president Trump is and was.

"Stand back and stand by" is all you need to know.
  • In 1986-7 the state of NSW in Australia asked for bids to build the first casino in Sydney. Four groups submitted bids for the lucrative project. Cabinet papers declassified 30 years later revealed that the Trump bid was rejected after NSW State Police reported that the Trump mafia connections and financial unviability made their bid undesirable.
