I've put some text on my original video of Brutus that covers some of the key facts about this massive stripping shovel. Feel free to leave any questions in the comments and I will be happy to answer if I can.

  • I've seen it in person. The pictures and film do no justice to how massive it actually is.
  • What a tragedy that the other massive stripping shovels were not preserved. The captain, the silver spade, GEM of Egypt, ect. These are the what men could be build and showed ourselves that we are capable of building massive machines. But most of it was thrown away for money. We should thank whoever was responsible for saving big brutus's life.

I am really glad that Big Brutus was preserved instead of just chopped up. I am going to go see it again and again until I can't get up anymore. Here's to the Electric Rope Shovel!
  • My father was the paymaster for Big Bend Coal Company in Clay County Indiana. They operated one similar to Big Brutus. He told stories of how big this machine was, and how big the dump truck needed to haul the coal away were. Great piece of history.

Amazing piece of machinery, how on gods earth did they manage to make something so big work so good.

Big Muskie and the Silver Spade both operated about 1.5hr from my house. I wish I could have seen either one of them in their entirety before they were scrapped, if only the internet was big back in the 90s like it is now I would have. Just seeing the Bucket of Big Muskie at 220cu yards is insane.

My thoughts on the working men who never came home. Long live.

  • @catghost7
Thanks for this my grandfather worked on Big Brutus!
  • This is why we should have electric power shovels, because they can do extremely easy work, plus they can last for a very long time.
  • Why such large shovels not builded in our days? Current tech level can recreate even largest of them. Why mining companies not order them?
  • @Guovssohas
Beautiful machine. But it probably was too big for it's own good? Too slow and sluggish because of it's massive size?
