Interesting fact, Scarlet and Violet can be linked to being in the mega universe because of Roaring Moon’s Pokédex entry. By extension this includes Sword and Shield because you can find Sonia’s book at naranja/uva academy.

Mega Evolution brought the best parts of Ben 10's Ultimate Alien series into Pokemon. Yeah, Mega Evolution is basically Ultimate mode, have fun with that realization because I sure did.

One major factor you forgot about was their initial reveal. All throughout XY and ORAS, the reveal of a brand new Mega Evolution was always exciting. Speculation was also rampant. People did know what Mega Mewtwo Y was they, though it was Mewthree. People though Lucario got a brand new evolution. People though Ash and Greninja fused somehow. You could see this impact online from 2013 to 2016. Look up on YouTube how many top 10 Mega Evolution video there are or Pokémon that need mega evolutions for Sun and Moon. You barely saw this with G-Max and you never saw it with Z moves and there isn't a point to discuss it with tera types.

Megas were meaningful AND unique. Megas took some pretty underappreciated Pokemon and made them beasts in battle. Kangaskhan and Mawile would have been completely unused Pokemon if not for their Megas. But it turned them into beasts in unique ways. You don't just get a universal power-up like with Z-moves, Dynamax and Terastilization. Mega Kangaskhan gets a buff no other Pokemon has ever seen before with Parental Bond. Yet it's different from Mega Mawile who gets Huge Power. Which is also different from Mega Banette who gets Prankster and Mega Lopunny who gets Scrappy. Megas allowed weaker Pokemon to shine by giving them synergistic buffs for their base kits. This no longer happens with the subsequent three gimmicks. There's no point in using Mawile with Tera when you can just use a better steel type with higher stats or even just tera a Pokemon into steel type. All it does is make the strong stronger and make the weak, even more irrelevant.

the smallest bit of mega lucario screen time clears the whole black and white series

I feel the need to mention it due to the topic being the gimmicks, Ultra necrozma’s signiature Z-move, Light that Burns the Sky, has a much cooler name when directly translated from Japanese. Heaven-Scorching Light of Destruction. WHO LET A MOVE NAME BE THAT COOL.

I loved mega evolution because the idea of how a bond with a trainer could be awakened to make the Pokémon even stronger was cool to me. Made me feel like when I was playing the games I had an actual bond with my Pokémon.

Personally Megas don’t feel like gimmicks to me, they feel like something with proper world building and an extension or an evolution to what was previously there… All other gimmicks are kinda meh, especially when every pokemon can use it… Gigantimaxing and Dynamaxing was kinda cool because of the Kaiju aspect but personally I hated SwSh games… Z-moves hot stale real fast as they felt generic especially because of the not so great animations… Terrastalization as a concept is amazing, but I feel its just tacked on and with the crowns it feels even more so like a gimmick… Megas felt powerful, exclusive, unique and were beautifully designed giving the pokemon a new appearance, so they just felt natural, thought through

it's not often brought up by by far my favorite part of the mega evo gimmicks were how the trainer presents them. sawyer has his stone as a bookmark, alain had a black bracelet that matches his outfit, diantha is a necklace, cynthia's a lipstick. its a small thing but it just give the trainers so much personality without needing to speak. the other gimmicks are presented just as.... gimmicks, all trainers have the same z-ring bracelets, all dynamax bracelets are the same (though it could be argued that they were designed based on wristband for sports) and the tera orbs are no different; they tell nothing to us about the trainer's personality and thats honestly is a shame.

Just realized that mega evolution is kinda like ultimate aliens from Ben 10😊
  • @elpopman2055
I think there will be some middle ground if Battle Bond Forms Are Added.. I have a theory that mega evolution is an artificial attempt to copy Battle Bond.. I think Mega Rayquzza is the only one that can naturally Mega Evolve

What made megas loved is what gamefreak didn't understand about what made them good, the fact that they felt more like an extra evolution, a mechanic, a new story for pokemons rather than a gimmick, you liked how strong they made pokemon feel and how the design made them look like a natural evolution, like mawile getting 2 mouths, mega venusaur continuing that sprout evolution, mega charizard x and y especially y looked like an evolution of charizard, they were awesome, but gamefreak instead thought, oh they liked meg evolutions because they were new, and that's why we got weird z moves, gigantamax looks like a qeird gimmick no different than cosplay pikachu or that gorgheist sizes, really like you see gigantamax you don't think oh wow gengar got a new evolution, no you think oh it's a gimmick that makes gengar bigger, and terastalization is just, oh now we can have monochromatic pokemon with a single type. People say gigantamax is better because it's more balanced, but honestly who cares about balance, in a game where only 10% at best of pokémon's are viable, and a game that started as a collection game not a battle game, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason why they keep making pokémon easier is to kill the competitive community, cause quite frankly they ruined the game for everyone lately. Also I'm positive even if gigantamax came first, people would still prefer megas, a 4th evolution or an evolution for legendaries were a concept as old as the very first generation, and megas were basically that, only thing that could compete with megas might be regional variants, but those too could work alongside megas, and maybe fusions can compete too, but those will never happen except for legendaries
  • @Kafkashino
Megas would forever be the best gimmick ever made by Pokemon Hoping there's more Pokemon to mega evolve like the eeveelutions
  • When I use Mega evolution it feels like I am going into a final form as it was the final battle in a Kamen rider episode
  • @voidchariet2461

  • @Fluminox-
I really do hope Megas get expanded on tenfold in Legends ZA
  • @al-sir
