The track was originally written by Pete Seeger. Peter, Paul and Mary included it on their first album released in 1962. It was one of the rare folk albums to reach US#1 - staying for over a month. The lead-off singles "If I Had a Hammer" and "Lemon Tree" reached numbers 10 and 35 respectively on the Billboard Pop Singles chart.

At the Grammy Awards of 1963, their recording of "If I Had a Hammer" won the Best Folk Recording and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal Grammies.

Lyrics:
Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the flowers gone?
Young girls have picked them everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the young girls gone, long time passing?
Where have all the young girls gone, long time ago?
Where have all the young girls gone?
Gone for husbands everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the husbands gone, long time passing?
Where have all the husbands gone, long time ago?
Where have all the husbands gone?
Gone for soldiers everyone
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the soldiers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the soldiers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards, everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the graveyards gone, long time passing?
Where have all the graveyards gone, long time ago?
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Gone to flowers, everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the flowers gone, long time passing?
Where have all the flowers gone, long time ago?
Where have all the flowers gone?
Young girls have picked them everyone.
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

I was drafted in July 66, survived Viet Nam War and listened to the great folk songs and protest music, it’s 2024 and time to bring back Barry Maguire Bob Dylan Joan Biaz PP and M etc, their messages are still relevant

I have been a soldier forover 40 years and seen death, destruction, pain, suffering and sorrow. This song breaks my heart to relive those moments. Even today we witness the senseless suffering, death and sorrow. This song is so beautifully delivered that one wonders at the senseless brutality of humans. When will they ever learn. When
  • So true those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Seems we still haven't learnt.

From 1959 to 1962 I lived in Westminster, CA and heard songs like this, the lemon song, monster mash, Michael Row your boat, the twist, if I had a hammer and more, all on the radio, and all before anybody ever heard of the Beatles. Folk music was my first love and still makes me smile today.
  • 70 years old and lived thru it all...such a beautiful song I still shed tears..
  • I am 80 now and really miss the folk music of the '60s and '70s. Peter Paul and Mary, The Kingston Trio, The Limelighters, Joan Baez, Judy Blue Eyes and all the great performers of that era... Wasn' t that a time.

Such talent, anthem of a generation. History repeats, but without the music.

Peter Paul and Mary captivated the spirit of the 1960s like no other. We had so much hope then. What happened? I miss Mary terribly, but I’m glad she’s at rest so she doesn’t have to see our nation like this.
