I think there's an important lesson behind the French surrender joke, a country that was scarred by one war which made people indecisive. France lost the war before it even began, the same as Belgium who also wanted nothing to do with the war. Sure, England was brave for keeping the fight alive but the channel is what really saved them. England never had the same trauma as some of its allies because the fighting was never on their island.
