  • It's a matter of time that you will have motor problems from not, at the very least, spraying off these bikes and quads before breaking them down. This XR has sand EVERYWHERE and could have used a quick scrubbing before taking everything apart. It just makes sense bro.

Air filter checks out for being wet but it dried but you button it back on and you can hear the dirt crunching in there. Should have removed the air filter clean the air box spotless clean the air filter re oil and reinstall then go to the carburetor. Then rinse and repeat. Fuel system maintenance 101.👌
  • Should have brushed the sand off before removing the spark plug…..sand down the bore…….😮
  • Joe, as loyal fan, I was just wondering, why do you always work on dirty bikes? Why not spend 30 minutes power washing it to prevent dirt from getting inside?
  • Don't know if anyone will see this as I just seen the vid but that was my bike and yes it did plunge in the water. Trail was still a bit flooded from heavy rain a few days prior and was trying to cross a small river to get back to the mainland. Sand and a pit or sink hole gave way halfway thru and plunged me chest deep. Was able to keep bike upright and push it out myself and then i immediately tipped it on the side and drained airbox carb and exhaust. Unfortunately the damage was too much and I flagged a atv with a rope down to tow me all the way back to my truck. Glad 2vintage was able to save it!
  • Check for spark while spraying gasoline on the sparkplug and head. You'll know if it does once you see melting gas tank plastic.
  • The first thing that should been done is change the oil and pull the plug before you started to kick on it😊 awesome video as always tho
  • @ZafiraSteve
Breaker bar....... what happened to the old handle bar 😆 🤣 😂
  • A lot of bikes won’t start if you turn the throttle when kicking them. Joe wouldn’t get my bikes to start most of the time due to that. It’s a thing that so many people do. I had to teach myself not to do it when I first started riding
  • Im so glad you got one of these xrs!!! Dropped my xr400r in a big mud hole. completely fludded. ran right after just fine. Decided to do a top end new piston rings/valve seals.. Still running on OEM piston since 2001!!! these will last forever.
  • Joe I don't want to sound like a dick , but man you need to get into a routine on power washing those bikes before you start working on them , I learned the hard way a peice of dirt fell into the engine and it cost me time and money cuz I had to tear the engine apart to get that dirt out .
  • oh yeah bad luck with latest bikes 😭 have you think to make a little parts stock? at least those you have positive sure that you're going to use them. keep the good work man!

I am the lucky buyer of this classic swamper machinery....changed the oil, filters, rear wheel bearings. Washed it good. And installed a perforated steel tubeing into the silencer and packed it with the stringy FMF silencer packing. Sounds better. Oh and removed the red spoke covers. I'm on week 2. This thing rips. Thanks for providing this excellent bike.
  • My dads neighbor had same bike think it's same year. Brought it to me this morning in a big wooden box, at least motors together. Said no compression and was stumbling with the spark, he thought he'd do it but smartened up and brought it here, bike was like new last time I saw it bout 3 months ago. Oh well it's a grand in my pocket, after parts. My apprentice don't want to touch it... all me. That's fine, watching you tear that one down reminded me how simple those old Hondas really are... great Job!!
  • Joe. As soon as you've checked for spark, take the carburettor off, then dribble a bit of 2-stroke pre-mixed gas into the spark plug hole then try kicking it over. If you can get it to 'bark off,' it makes life a lot easier. Saves a load of time on diagnosis...
  • For the future...if water got in that tank and you drained it from the pitcock then the water and gas would be separated and only the heavier fluid would be seen at first. Great content, keep it coming!

Thanks for the great videos if you suspect intake valves contacted piston, I would pull all four valves check them up in a drill and spin them and make sure they’re true.
