This film updates "Norfolk's Forgotten Chalk Stream" - the original 2022 film about the Gaywood River in West Norfolk, UK. Things looked a lot better during last summer, despite the drought but then ... more river "maintenance".
In response a group of independent local people have formed Gaywood River Revival to campaign for the restoration of the Gaywood. Find them at GaywoodRiverRevival.org and on Twitter @gaywoodriver

Key words . . . "You couldn't make it up" The abject stupidity of some of our bureaucrats and the bureaucracies they create is utterly breathtaking.

Bloody depressing. Surely there must be something can be done to stop the works. It's good to see so many rivers being restored but the left hand has to know what the right hand is doing or this will occur elsewhere

Thank you for the update. I really hope concerned people, in the area, can make a positive, and permanent, difference. Government changes slowly, but it can be changed. I look forward to your next update.
  • Breaks my heart to see this amazing ecosystem destroyed each time it gains a little momentum. Best Regards from Oregon USA.

I've lived next to the River since 1964 and can remember kids swimming in it near Like road bridge in the seventies. Last year was the worst condition I have ever seen it in . Even after weeks of no heavy rainfall it was still running with silt.
  • Very nice production. From Georgia (USA), good luck in your endeavors to restore and protect your river(s).

These bureaucratic institutions are so absurd. I’ve just acquired some farmland By planting trees, creating swales springs have reactivated, my plan is to dig out a series of ponds and reinstate, and create a small stream from the springs. The previous owner used all the usual pesticides herbicides fungicides and fertilisers in the land which feeds into the spring. I will not use anything so the water will remediate. I hope to get some native Brown Trout to stock the Springfed pond
  • Wishing you every success in educating those undermining your great work!

I wish you all good luck with it. Raising awareness and, eventually, public pressure can effect change in our world for the better.
  • @luke1023
I hope people become interested enough to create enough pressure to get these works stopped and the stream restored.
  • I really enjoyed your videos about the chalk stream. Keep up the good work.

Very interesting, I learned something new I have never realised how much damage this caused. Thanks for sharing.

Typo in your link. Gaywood is spelled "Gaywpod..." Anyway, good work, and a fine example for all stream restorationists.

Thanks You for this again Peter. Superb documentation. I wish Gaywood River Revival every success. From NZ. When I was the Peddars Way this August, I'd love to deviate to get near that rising shown at 0:20 --- can anyone possibly help guide me please. I'd love to see, and even drink from a rising chalk stream once in my life!
  • Good work highlighting particularly important eco systems that need to be looked after better, we need to change the way we look at the land really I think

some humans just don't understand nature, it always saddens me to see a water system decimated by human activity, you can obviously and clearly see the difference in a lifeless stream as to one that is clean and full of life, when i was a kid going to primary school, i used to wag school and play at the creek, i still love exploring, it's such a shame what human activity has done to nature, our ancient ancestors appreciated nature, imagine what they would think today of they were too see it.

So sad when you think what this river could be with a little care , I despair every time I walk by it .

An excellent video highlighting a truly awful situation. This is worth bringing to the attention of Feargal Sharkey OBE (a once awesome pop star and now prominent campaigner for UK rivers and their survival).

This is a travesty they must not be allowed to repeat. I hope the works can get cancelled for this summer.
