LYRICS:
In articulo mortis
Caelitus mihi vires

Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!
E’en though it be a cross
That raiseth me.

There let the way appear,
(In articulo mortis caelitus mihi vires.)
Steps unto heav’n;
(Deo adjuvante non timendum in perpetuum.)
All that Thou sendest me,
(Dirige nos Domine ad augusta per angusta.)
In mercy giv’n;
(Sic itur ad astra excelsior, excelsior, excelsior, excelsior, excelsior.)

Still all my song shall be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
(Dirige nos Domine ad augusta per angusta.)
Nearer to Thee!
(Sic itur ad astra excelsior!)

Though like the wanderer,
(In articulo mortis caelitus mihi vires.)
The sun gone down,
(Deo adjuvante non timendum in perpetuum.)
Darkness be over me,
(Dirige nos Domine ad augusta per angusta.)
My rest a stone;
(Sic itur ad astra excelsior, excelsior, excelsior, excelsior, excelsior.)

Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
(Dirige nos Domine ad augusta per angusta.)
Nearer to Thee!
(Sic itur ad astra excelsior!)

Or if, on joyful wing
(In articulo mortis caelitus mihi vires.)
Cleaving the sky,
(Deo adjuvante non timendum in perpetuum.)
Sun, moon, and stars forgot,
(Dirige nos Domine ad augusta per angusta.)
Upward I fly!
(Sic itur ad astra excelsior. Dirige nos Domine ad augusta per angusta. Sic itur ad astra excelsior!)

LATIN TRANSLATION
In articulo mortis [At the moment of death]
Caelitus mihi vires [My strength is from heaven]
Deo adjuvante non timendum [God helps us; nothing should be feared]
In perpetuum [Forever]
Dirige nos Domine [Direct us, O Lord]
Ad augusta per angusta [To high places by narrow roads]
Sic itur ad astra [Such is the path to the stars]

  • @HAL_9000__
Say what you want about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, these good people KNOW how to praise God in song. Outstanding.
  • @wongcayven9893
The soloist breathed at 2:23, held the top note from 2:25 to 2:35 and continued singing until he finally breathed at 2:40. A 17-second belt at soprano range by a man! Totally awesome.
  • @dragonwarriorht
I'm a Muslim and I really love Christianity and their choirs. Much respect
  • @Lamidizle
Who is still listening in 2024❤❤❤
  • @Shumway-ug1gk
Out of these 37 millions of views, I at least contributed 1,000 of them lol I can't stop re-listening. And I noticed that no matter what kind of mood I have, this song and this singing is always able to go through my heart that is surrounded by my anxiety and depression. God bless all of those, who use their God-given talents to worship our Lord. Because these fruits that you bring, may save someone's physical and/or spiritual life in some day. Be blessed and may God multiply your mastery of singing, playing the music, and help you to stay motivated to continue to do such things. You will be rewarded. And may God bless those who are struggling, those who have to fight challenges in life. Let God bring you strength, and holy piece for your spiritual health. God bless you.
  • If mere humans can sound like this I'm definitely excited for heaven's choirs. This is a beautiful piece.❤

I'm from Indonesia. My family background from other religion, but thank Jesus, He call me to follow His way. Hallelujah
  • Modern Christian music lacks so much of the awe and presence that these amazing old hymns had.
  • I can only hope I can join my wife of 45 years in the Heavens expressed in Nearer my God to thee.
  • @vickiguyton6509
God bless you sweetheart! I am 74 and have had friends and family with depression. You stay near to Jesus. He cares for you so much! Just seeing your comment will cause others to pray for you. Never give up, I pray for your healing dearest. You are loved! And, you are brave and stronger than you think because Jesus is your strength! Trust Him and talk to Him often!
