Why The Lego Movie 2 Wasn't Awesome

When the first LEGO Movie was announced, it seemed like an obvious marketing campaign for the LEGO brand to sell more toys. What we got however, was a truly unique story and next level animation from a team that revolutionized the way real world toys could be animated. But for it's sequel, The LEGO Movie 2 The Second Part, it seemed audiences were not as amazed at the little innovation that transpired between films. So what made The LEGO Movie 2 such a disappointment?

The idea that people were getting tired of the Lego movie’s visual style is quite frustrating when most animated films were sticking to the same CG style at that time anyway.

The Lego Batman movie was pretty dang good though!
  • I was just disappointed with Rex Dangervest and how he was a typical twist villain. Being an alternate future version of Emmet wasn't a bad idea, but the way it was executed was just underwhelming. The fact that both Rex and Emmet were voiced by Chris Pratt made the twist SUPER obvious.

The movie was fine but compared to the first it massively underwhelmed

I personally think the biggest problem was the plot. In the first movie, you had a clear end goal: Stop Lord Business. This was achieved in a great way in that Emmet makes Lord Business understand that individuality is important, and that everyone should have a chance to make something different from everyone else. The sequal felt lacking in these aspects. The clear end goal (for the beginning) was to stop Queen Whatevra Wannabi. But then the whole brainwashing thing happened, and then suddenly you have this mess where Emmet's actions are different from everyone else's. At the end of the movie we find that Queen Whatevra Wannabi was never the villain. But this fact feels... annoying. The whole movie was spent dramatizing a big battle or something between just Emmet and the Queen. And while that battle still happened between Emmet and Rex, it had close to no buildup, and just felt... anticlimactic.

Never saw The Second Part but The Lego Batman movie was so good and it is very sad we’ll never see the sequel. The writers said it was called Lego Superfriends and the focal point of it was Batman and Superman’s relationship with some crazy cameo only Lego can do, so I assume it was Marvel characters but that is only my assumption.

I watched both lego movies with my mom in theaters (I was already an adult at the time, we both just thought they looked funny) as well as the lego Batman movie at home. We both loved all 3 and would quote them all the time. She passed away a month ago and now they mean even more to me than ever, flaws and all.

Sure the sequel is a bit underwhelming compared to the original, but I don't think by any means it's a bad film. It's still better than many animated family films.

I feel like it was a natural evolution of the narrative from the first movies; the movement from parent/child to siblings made a lot of sense. It was less about "the sexes" and more about how siblings learn to relate and paky with each other, which is something not really focused on in modern fiction. It simply suffered from the unfortunate reality of diminishing returns.

I really think the Ninjago movie hurt the franchise the worst, because it proved they only had one idea to go with, even when it made no sense with the world that existed. Ninjago already had multiple seasons of a series by that point, so they'd developed a ton of lore and characters over that time. The movie threw all that out in favor of rehashing the same tone as the other Lego movies. I think the second Lego movie could have done fine if Ninjago had shown that they could do something different, story-wise, in between the two movies. My son is still watching and rewatching the Ninjago series to this day, but I think he's forgotten the movie even exists at this point. It was easily the worst Lego movie.

It's interresting how some audiences want to see something new (Lego movies got stale), but other audiences want the exact same thing over and over (Fast nad Furious).

I feel that Across the Spider-Verse would suffered a similar fate if there had been a lot of spin-offs before its release
  • @Styrophoamicus
On the one hand, it's sad that Warner Bros scrapped the franchise (especially after hearing what Chris McKay wanted to do for a sequel). On the other hand, I'm glad we got 4 solid good-to-great range movies.
  • I think the main problem is the fact that the first lego movie along with the batman movie set the bar way too high. These films felt too good to be true, so when the creators tried to recreate the same magic they weren't able to do so.
  • @Fanchus337
Didn't know there was a second lego movie tbh
  • Surprisingly the Lego portion of Across the Spiderverse had that Lego Movie magic.

One of the biggest problems I had with this film is how they handled Rex Dangervest as a character. Not only is the twist with him actually being Emmet from the future so oblivious that you can't help but groan, but he feels like an excuse to have a twist villian just because it was popular at the time (and even then people were getting sick of it) I think instead they should've had it where he was actually trying to prevent Armamageddon after he lost his friends, thinking the reason why he failed was because he wasn't tough enough so he goes back in time to help Emmet be tough, thinking that will stop Armamageddon. However the way he went at it (choosing violence and not listening to others) only causes Armamageddon to happen again. Its only when he and Emmet realise that you don't need to be tough to be strong and its good to understand both sides is when Rex realises his mistakes and helps Emmet to fix them, ultimately sacrificing his existence in the process
  • Tbh, I quite enjoyed the the second Lego movie- I thought it was a really cute way of showing how a little girl would play with her legos- from making them sing and dance and having every character be as likable as possible- I’m not sure why you say it lacked imagination, cause it sure was an imaginative movie to me. Sure it wasn’t perfect by any means, nor was it as good as the original… but it’s a movie that deserves more credit then people give it
  • @redtsar
It was an ok movie, it seemed to me that they were playing it safe instead of trying something different or risky That's the problem with sequels, they ride out the success of the original knowing that the fanbase will come and watch it regardless
  • @frogmouth2
It could also be said that there was a lot of franchise fatigue and the film fell into a lot of traps that sequels often do like splitting up the main cast.
