Hello and welcome to the Powered By Rock podcast where I am going to be speaking with one of the coolest guys in the punk rock scene in Sam King of Get Dead and the newly created genre-blending punk/hip-hop project Codefendants today.

Get Dead has evolved from an acoustic punk rock band to a more uptempo sound over the last couple of albums sort of like layering some Rancid on top of Social Distortion, in my own opinion, but in the process making something totally new and incredibly hyperactive in a live setting.

Over the last couple of years, Sam also got linked up with Ceschi (Chess-key) Ramos after helping to raise funds to release him from prison and the friendship turned into the new hip-hop/punk sounding style that is labeled “Crime Wave” to form the Codefendants with Fat Mike of NOFX rounding out the lineup.

I am super pumped to talk to Sam today about all of this and more, because he is one of the single most interesting people in the punk scene today.

Excellent interview. I'm a huge get dead and codefendants fan

I saw Codefendants live, and between songs Sam hops over on to his turn tables and busts out the coolest remix of In my eyes by Minor Threat, it was unreal. I also got to sing next to Ceschi in the pit. Easily the best show i've ever been to

Finally a decent interview with Sam. Ask him what bothers him about the system and he will speak about it for hours. Very well done💣💥🔥
  • Get Dead is one of my favorite newer bands and it’s obvious how much Fat Mike likes him. The Codefendants record is great.

I admire Sam for how well he articulates his first hand experience being a child of a parent who was distressed, abused, and manipulated by a shitty, broken, profiteering prison system. I'm sorry for any person that has to endure that shit. AND Wow! Talk about turning shit into gold, I love the music, lyrics and pure antiestablishment attitudes conveyed by Get dead and Codefendants bands. I get energised. I feel empowered. I feel seen, and I feel connected to the unseen, or those who feel unseen. Thanks For the interview Isaac! Get hearing from you Sam.

Great interview! Sam is cool guy.
  • It’s funny to hear this being old haha in the early eighties when rap came out the metal heads and punks were the audience.
  • Get dead has always been great. Always had a little Swingin utters vibe in there with the ska, hardcore, folk, a little hip hop, and everything else. I always loved that you really couldn't label them one thing. And now Codefendants are keeping up that whole genre blending aspect. Love it.
  • From the first second i heard tall cans i was hooked on get dead. Sam is the perfect front man for a punk band.
  • I love Sam, he’s the man. I heard the song crime wave and I got deja vu of the first time I heard pepper spray. Right when I was feelin it and sayin “fuck yeah” it was over. Gotta just put it on repeat 3 times and it’s a full song
