They had both male and female emotions in Riley’s mind so the film wouldn’t only appeal to girls.
-
I honestly think it's 'cause she's the protagonist, and we need some variety there.
-
Or the creators just didn’t want the movie to be too “girly” by having all girl emotions and added boys to her emotions so it is enjoyable by all
-
Theory: the dad isn’t controlled by just anger it’s the protectiveness side of Anger that’s in lead and the mom isn’t sad she’s just feeling empathy for Riley(my opinion) Edit: ty for 3k this has never happened to me Edit 2: Mom I’m famous :x Edit 3: at one point u get so much likes YouTube doesn’t keep track of them
-
No. I think she inherited her mom’s joy, sadness, and disgust. While she got her dad’s anger and fear
-
Can you guys imagine the complaint of people if Riley's emotions were all females in the first place?
-
Riley could also be a girl with a tomboy personality.
-
Or… maybe it’s just a movie.
-
Bro It's OK to take a break every now and then.

Riley's not a girly girl. Doesnt mean she isnt identify as a girl. Her emotions are probably based off her personality. Which means she is girly but also a jock.
-
Two Boys go bowling: They must be gay. Two girls kissing: They're just good friends. Girl has a boyfriend: I think she's gender confused. My theory is a specific number of the audience is confused about Riley's gender, while Riley herself is just being herself. Maybe she's more of a tomboy. Remember those? When I was a little boy, I played with the girls. I played with dolls. I had a play kitchen. Riley's male emotions are probably there because the movie would be very female-heavy. Which probably came off as a risk that might alienate little boys. The same thing almost happened in Legend of Korra. But the test audience didn't care in that instance. Probably wouldn't have cared with Inside Out either. since the movie was about a girl coming to terms with her emotions and had a message about embracing sadness sometimes.

Have you considered that it's just a movie and you're looking too deeply into it?
-
My brain just exploded from complete ridiculousness
-
Not everything is about gender thing, she's literally inherited her father emotions and mixed with her mom
-
I mean I'm just sayin the movie already showed shes a bit of a tomboy so I'm pretty sure thats why they are boys and girls in here emotion thingy
-
They be digging too much into a kids movie
-
Also her dad was angry because his daughter started acting out after the move so hes parenting her. And her koms upset because the move has really affected her and probably feels bad
-
No. Just stop forcing things that aren’t there. Her dad was angry because she was being super rude in that scene and he’s clearly stressed out the whole movie because of the his job and the move. Mom had sadness in charge because she’s caring and empathic which highlights how Joy doesn’t understand that Sadness brings more than tears and moping to Riley. Her emotions have both genders so they can be 5 unique characters. They also don’t look like her yet. Pixar can market it to boys and girls.

Riley is a tomboy girl who was upset because of the move. She’s not confused about her gender.
