On a Thursday afternoon in July, I drove from Alamosa, Colorado to Conejos Canyon to record a video for my YouTube channel.

I was barely 2 miles down Forest Service Road 250 when I discovered Rainbow Trout Ranch. I turned my hazard lights on and jumped out of the car. My plan was to snap a quick video and move on. As I was recording the video, an employee of the ranch saw what I was doing and quickly came over on his ATV. I thought, “Uh-oh, this can’t be good.” When he arrived, I explained that I was simply making a video. To my surprise, he was very friendly. He gave me a bit of history about the ranch and invited me up to their Historic Lodge. His name was Tim and he’s actually the Ranch Manager. He ended up giving me a quick tour of the place. He also introduced me to the owners (David & Jane), who were very busy, but still took the time to greet me. Not only that, but Olivia was sweet enough to come out and recommend some local hikes. They invited me to eat with them at either lunch or dinner. Even though I wasn’t a guest at the ranch, they made me feel extremely welcome!

I thought, “Wow, this is a pretty great start to the day!”

Rainbow Trout Ranch is located in the Conejos River Valley at an elevation of about 9,000 ft.

This dude ranch boasts of being the perfect family vacation where you can ride horses, fish, hike, swim, go white-water rafting, enjoy nature, and even ride on America’s highest & longest narrow-gauge steam train. The steam train is called the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and I actually recently posted a video about it if you’re interested.

The lodge was constructed in the mid 1920s. At that time, it was the largest log structure in the southwest. It was said that not a single nail was used in this 18,000 square foot structure, just wooden pegs!

In the late 1920s, the door was opened to the public as a guest ranch with extraordinary fishing. They offer a mile and a half of private fishing, as well as a heated outdoor swimming pool, hot tub, and a volleyball & basketball court.

They also take a lot of pride in their private cabins & home-cooked meals.

I love that the stars aligned on this day…allowing me to record this video of such a cool place!

My favorite part about this place were the beautiful horses, the sweet little dog, and the swarms of hummingbirds. This hidden gem has been open for almost 100 years and they get 5 stars on Google. Do yourself & your family a favor and check out their website at www.rainbowtroutranch.com/
