Farinelli's singing voice was given by the Polish soprano Ewa Malas-Godlewska and the American countertenor Derek Lee Ragin, who were recorded separately and then digitally merged to recreate the sound of a castrato.
  • One of the most prolific castratos who ever lived! It was rumored that Haendel wrote this piece specifically for Farinelli, and was a huge admirer of his work.
  • I heard a young man singing like this 10 years ago, in an arched area off Piazza San Marco in Venice, that amplified the sound. I was totally overwhelmed both by the beauty of his voice and it's otherworldly quality. I had to leave before he finished, it was just too much of an auditory overload. Wish I'd stayed now.

I would suggest you guys check the recording of this piece by Radu Marian - an endocrinical castrato whose voice never broke due to hormonal imbalance in puberty. While he would would not have the enlarged chest as historical castrati (who were known to have huge chest cavities due to hormonal imbalance and could therefore hold a note up to 90 seconds with incredible depth) he is probably something closest to a castrato we will ever hear.

I adored this movie! What an amazing voice the (woman) behind the scenes of filming the castrato's voice. What and obscene and brutal thing to do to a child for society's entertainment. Shame of them and shame on the Church that facilitated it at the time. I believe the last castrato, Moreschi, died in 1922.

  • After watching and reading other comments, it seems that I heard in brief about this practice way back when I was a kid at home. Probably my mom told me. Really horrible thing to do to someone or for someone to endure. Thank you other commenters for the explanations. I had no idea what was going on.
