It's hard to classify Derren Brown, because he excels in so many fields it's almost unfair to the rest of us. He's possibly most well known for using psychological manipulation and hypnotic suggestion to get people to take a certain course of action, as witnessed in his Netflix specials The Push and Sacrifice.

Derren is also a world-class photographer and artist (check out his creations at Instagram), and author of several books -- the latest is Happy: Why More or Less Everything Is Fine. He's obviously a very busy man, so we're delighted he was able to take the time for this interview in his house of many splendors and surprises.

What We Discuss with Derren Brown:
💡 How did Derren Brown make the transition from law student to career hypnotist?
💡 How does psychological manipulation and hypnotic suggestion work to make people operate counter to their own desires?
💡 How does Derren use his own manipulative skills for good?
💡 How do faith healers and psychics ply their trades so convincingly?
💡 What are the limits to hypnotic influence?
And much more…

Love Derren's response to the aggressive, "What are you looking at?" and will keep it in mind for the future. My mother had a teenage guy say that aggressively to her at a train station. Her response was simply, "You tell me." He had nothing further to say. Another time when she was with her brother and their car had broken down, a bikie stopped and offered help. When he asked my mother if she felt afraid of him she asked, "Should I be?"

As well as being a really genuine, nice guy, Derren is an amazing performer. You will be blown away with any of his live shows. I have not been programmed. I have not been programmed. I have not been programmed. WTF!

Amazing interview!! Derren Brown is a brilliant man and for me the best at his craft mentalism, he is on a different level. As for his book HAPPY is very well written and everyone should read it, you'll see life in a different manner. Congrats on the interview, very good job. Best of regards

I actually loved the questions and answers at the end. The two of you really seemed to get along and with that you could (and did) ask some other type of questions. Most of the interviews result in the same answers from Derren Brown, because he prepared well and is mostly asked about the same things. So well done Jordan for getting to the more personal stuff too.

Wow, this is the first time I'm "seeing" this. I've only listened to it in the podcast over and over.
  • Fantastic interview, thank you! Derren is an amazing guy, could listen all day!

Really nice long-form interview. Derren was very generous with his time! So glad to see him breaking into the US market, although I wish I was back in NY to see him live. My sister is there but has no interest as far as I know. I still want to see the quintessential Derren Brown interview that answers ALL my questions but I guess I will have to do it myself some day...
  • Have loved Derren's work for a long time, from his earlier TV craft through to his shows and his art too. His skills are fascinating. While my awareness is extremely low in everything he does, it is always good to spot in his episodes how the people are primed and get a tiny insight into how they are manipulated.

An absolutely brilliant interview that flowed so perfectly & I could’ve listened to a further 24 hours!
  • I wonder how many other fellow Scots there might be here? As someone who is not only a Scot, but also a whisky enthusiast, I can't help noticing an absolutely brilliant selection of bottles from some of the very best Scottish distilleries; and not always the most obvious ones. A man of taste methinks!
  • Such a great episode. Listened to the podcast but wanted the video also.
