  • Especially for a large faction with lots of resources in a server with scripts enabled, basic skimmers (Printable, no subgrid suspension) are some of the best methods for planetary logistics. They use less electricity than aircraft, but are a lot faster than rovers. They work reliably with remote control autopilot, so long as there are enough waypoints. My faction even got one to work with the PAM script, and we now use them for fully automated base-to-base logistics on a fraction of the electricity consumption of aircraft. Our logistics skimmer is based on the Rescue Rover from the trade stations, but has been retrofitted into a atmo-thrust skimmer with the refinery at the back replaced with hydrogen tanks. It moves hydrogen from our mining outpost at an ice lake to our main base.

"Is it worth the resources?" Well, did you have fun building and driving it?
  • In a survival scenario...maybe not so much. But then it's less about the resources, and more about the time. In a survival scenario, you want to get things done fast. This would certainly be superior to most rovers...all rovers, really...but not by so much that it would be worth taking the extra time to construct it all. And if rovers are so useless that this is the better option after all, then it would just be faster to build an aircraft instead. That said...depending on the circumstances, I might build it just to build it, even in a survival game.
  • Never knew these things existed before I found this channel, looks really cool man you did a good job on it. Was wondering if there was a reason the wheels are just frames I've tested it in my world and seems to make no difference or Is it just to make it look that tad bit cooler

This looks awesome! I think I may try a design like this in one of my survival worlds. Keep going at it!

Even in singleplayer worlds, ESPECIALLY in challenge worlds, this would probably be a common solution to an uncommon problem: How to get from point A to point B using the least amount of materials and energy possible in a certain timeframe. Sure it might take less resources for a rover, but it moves slow and has bad maneuverability in tight spaces. Sure the aircraft are more maneuverable and fast, but they suck resources and power and can't carry as much. The skimmer strikes a bizarrely key balance between the two. It takes marginally more resources and power than a rover, but offers even better maneuverability and weight limits than an aircraft. That being said skimmers are more prone to falling off cliffs than aircraft, but that con barely sets foot on the same scale as the pros.

This might not be the most efficient ground craft power and volume speaking but sure it looks cool. You can disable the """good"""bot tutorial in the settings.

man, I shudder to think of the hours and hours of fiddling it would have taken to get all the hinges and tire settings just right.
  • @stevenkraft1973
is this made with large and small grid blocks? its beautiful
  • They should make hydrogen engines - a version where it actually can propel a car through a crank shaft and add some real world style gears so you can make your own gearboxes. You could make real cars. They could simplify it enough into chassis parts so you could use a gas/hydrogen engine. Have a battery only run accessories.
  • @Neuralatrophy
Thats some pretty complicated suspension going on there... I count at least 12 hinges and 2 wheels per arm !
  • @anonymous-mj8wb
do these have an issue with falling through the ground on laggier multiplayer servers? i have a TERRIBLE experience with anything wheel related since everything i make falls through the ground eventually.
  • @Hellsparkt
how were you able to get a block to the wheels?
  • @raxgarshiro434
One qurstion....how to know which side is up and down on the wenges/wedge(forgot the name)
  • @sampaki8754
So all of a sudden I'm trying to attach a block to the end of the 1x1 wheel (suspension type) and earlier it worked. Now later into my play session, no matter how many new suspensions I pop in and try to attach a block, it shows a red border instead of green. Any idea what might have happened? Is it a glitch not allowng the block to attach to the 1x1 suspension wheel ?
