Descent is a first person action game made by Parallax Software and published by Interplay. It was released in 1994.

It came out for the following platforms: DOS, Mac OS, Acorn Archimedes, WiiWare and PlayStation

Note:I played this with Descent Rebirth Source Port. www.dxx-rebirth.com/

Even though Descent can be considered as a first person shooter it plays quite a bit different than a normal FPS because here you don't run around on foot but instead take control of some advanced futuristic spacecraft.

In Descent there is no left or right or up and down (well maybe an upside down :P ) your spacecraft can fly in any direction at any time and even rotate around. So what was the ceiling before could now be the floor or the floor could now be a wall to the left. This is quite cool but can also be a problem at the same time because you can lose orientation very quick if you don't know what you are doing. And if you have problems with motion sickness then you eventually want to avoid this game altogether ^^

The levels or missions in Descent all take place within some mining facilities. The first few levels are quite small and easy to navigate through but that quickly changes further into the game. Soon you will find yourself flying around aimlessly and trying to find the next keycard or exit point. There is a 3D-Wireframe Map you can open at any time but that thing will soon be filled with so many lines that you can't see where one tunnel ends and the other begins :D

Goal in every mission is to either destroy a generator or some giant boss robot. Whatever of the two is the case, after you destroyed them the self destrucion seqence will be activated and you only got 40 seconds to reach the mine exit (so you may want to check out where it is before destryoing the generator/boss)

Descent also has multiplayer and coop. You can play the entire campaign with up to 4 players. So if you got a bad sense of direction you can bring your friends aboard. Remember 4 brains are better than one! ;)

This game deserves more recognition than it gets. It is the first FPS to feature 3D polygon enemies, and a truly 3D environment with complete freedom of movement. It is every bit as important to the gaming industry as DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D.

A demo version of this was on the new PC my mom bought in 1996. I spent hours playing it and I even called Parallax Software talking to a very friendly rep about the merits of 'Descent'. They sent me a flyer in the mail advertising all of their games. The 90's were a fantastic time for PC gamers with so many groundbreaking games, new internet sites devoted to them and the rise of gaming culture.

I'll never forget getting lost during the escape mission here with the countdown timer. With 5 seconds left I almost gave up, but I saw the exit out of the corner of my eye. Racing through it with 1 second to spare then getting that cutscene of a Star Wars-like escape through the explosion gave me SUCH a thrill as a young 8 year old! I'll never forget this game!

Finally I find this game! I didn't remember the name but I still had the memories on spaceship actions in the base of the moon. I was little bit scary playing this when I was a child but in good way. What a flashback.

Oh my, the MEMORIES!!! My entire family loved this game! We had a good number of classics on our Macintosh: Heretic, Doom, Wolfenstien, Descent, you name it. I MISS THE 90s AND I WANT THEM BACK!!!!

I actually choked up when I finally remembered the name of this game and started watching this video. This was one of the memorable games from the 1990´s for me. It was the first 3D game that actually made me nauseous! Good times.
  • This is an incredibly underrated game, and also has one of the most frustratingly non-specific names that has been reused by so many other games and other media, making it very difficult to Google or otherwise find anything related to in this supposed Information Age.
  • Had this game on all of our high school computers, we’d have huge multiplayer battles all the time with this. Love this game
  • My Dad brought this game home when I was a kid, it blew my mind at the time, and it's still great today. The man was ahead of his time.

This takes me back to the 90's. It was so cool seeing my dad playing this, besides the OG Tetris. Going to get this on Steam now!

Best 3D 360 game ever. Most people can't handle it. They get sick from vertigo and makes most people very dizzy, and they can't play it. I loved it. I am now 65 yro. and would love to play it again.
