For years tensions have been escalating in the South China sea, with China trying to use the waters to exert greater influence over the region. However, China's tactic of building new islands and general Chinese controversy has caused the issue to bubble over recently. In this video, we explain the historic issues, what China wants and why this suddenly became an even bigger issue.

I’m not on China’s side, but you have to love the Americans refuse to accept UN laws, but still trying to enforce them on others...
  • Can we please appreciate what a quality video this is: 1. It provides a really perfect amount of context – something so often lacking from the 'news'. 2. It provides context 3. It provides context 4. It provides context
  • Only 1 skirmish in 80 years, that is actually remarkably peaceful for humans lol

I've seen people defending China's claim basically by saying "it's called the South China Sea! It's ours!". On that basis, the tiny state of Melaka — not the country of Malaysia; just its one state — would be entitled to the entire length of the Strait of Malacca, which would be silly, wouldn't it?

We've had TLDR Brexit and TLDR Covid. The time has come for TLDR China !

It’s not United Nations anymore. It’s United Chinese Nations
  • Good to know that while we cook the planet in million year old fossil fuel, driving mass extinction, that we're busy greedily squabbling over dashes on a map. We'll be respected for generations to come.
  • @Holammer
I shudder when I imagine all the obliterated Eco systems when china built those "islands".

It's rather like the board game Risk; it's all about world domination.

China has claims on Philippine islands - supposedly dating from hundreds of years ago. Yet, the oldest world map designed by a Chinese man is at the Biblioteca Ambrosia in Milan Italy. It dates from the mid 1600's. It was designed under the tutelage of Matteo Ricci, because European map-makers were way ahead of Chinese. Early Chinese maps of what's now 'The S. China Sea' don't even show Philippine islands. It's proof that, while Europeans were traveling and charting the world, China was stuck in its myopic region, with little awareness of what was going on, geographically, nearby.

You need to mention that Philippines has Spanish era colonial maps that could go toe to toe with China’s historical claims.

Pretty much an Education there! Thank you so very much for taking the time and effort to produce this video. Much appreciated!!!

The water area is called East Sea of Vietnam simply because it locates on the east of Vietnam; West Philippines Sea because it’s on the west of Philippines; and South China Sea because it’s on the south of China. Basic geography, no ownership included.
  • From this video.. There's little mention of the Philippines Edit: Its all with China, Australia, Japan, USA instead of Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Philippines
  • @jakeroxas6
Very comprehensive and well explained. Providing context to the issue made it possible for a layman to understand. Well done!
