The poor dude that lived where the first official battle started, only to move to Appomattox and have it end in his parlor. Crazy.

5:42 "Martha! Not now!!" "I'm cleaning! Do you want us to get rats?!"

While most Confederate officers were pardoned after the war. The only exception was that of Henry Wirz, the commandant of the Camp Sumter POW prison. This prison was in such a terrible condition that 3,000 of its 32,000 prisoners had perished due to starvation, disease, dysentery and physical abuse from the guards. It was due to this that not even the Johnston administration could let Wirz off easy and as so he was put on trial, and sentenced to death by hanging, which took place on the 10th of November, 1865.

Thank god the underdogs didnt win the civil war like they did in the revolutionary war.

Its ironic that so many Union officers had it out for Mosby, because after the war he became good friends with Grant and an staunch ally of the Republican Party. In fact Mosby's political career was helped along by Grant and other Republicans, which saw him appointed as the US Consul to Hong Kong in 1878, and would later get a high position in the Department of Justice when he returned home. Mosby was one of the handful (literally you could probably count them on your hands) of ex-Confederates who was actually honest about the war being about slavery and criticized the Lost Cause myth going around. This was part of the reason he was hated by Confederate sympathizers after the war.

“And Lee took a long look at this copper-colored person, and then said, “I'm glad,” shaking Parker's hand, “I'm glad there's one real American here.” Parker's response was, "We are all Americans." True then. True today.

He accepted the terms of surrender and THEN wrote a letter to President Lincoln. What a boss.
-
Fun fact, a man named William Sherman took him and his troops on a total war path through Georgia destroying both train tracks and cities, until he got to Savannah, which he said was too pretty to destroy and gave it to president Abraham Lincoln as a Christmas present.

I can’t help but notice, when it showed the generals shaking hands….how was it physically possible to shake hands using opposite hand?
-
Grants conditions were surprisingly mild, given that the situation of Lee was hopeless......looks like he really wished to stop the bloodbath....
-
Can you imagine how many people got taken out just carrying those letters back and forth between generals?
-
They are still fighting but in a different way. You can think about that
