Once relegated to only being a Thanksgiving side dish or in a casserole at the local potluck, sweet potatoes have seen a huge boost in popularity over the past few years. Sweet potato fries and other variations on this tasty tuber have become far more prevalent at restaurants and on dinner tables, at least in part due to the belief that they have a greater health value than regular potatoes.

But you may not be getting all the health value you could out of your sweet potatoes, or worse, you may be making some incorrect choices when cooking, storing or choosing them. Avoid these mistakes everyone makes when cooking sweet potatoes.

My two cents to speeding up the cooking process: Poke a few times with a fork, pop in the microwave for a couple of min. (depending on the size) before cooking in the oven. Cuts the cooking time in half and doesn’t effect the flavor! 😁😁

Yes my father would grow sweet potatoes on our homestead and to keep them in the back of home at the beginning of the rows of garden he would dig holes and put the sweet potatoes in the holes, cover with pine straw and then cover dirt on top of that. (Called Banks) I remember every time we needed potatoes my mom would say go to the bank and get some potatoes. 😊😊. How I miss those days. Thanks for sharing. Peace and Love ❤️
  • I cook them whole (skin pierced) at 400 F for 45-60 minutes, depending on size. The high heat breaks down the tough fibers, so the interiors are as smooth and creamy as a soufflé.
  • If your sweet potato starts sprouting put in the ground or a pot. The greens are very healthy cooked like spinach. Makes a pretty house plant too.
  • I learned this from a NY Times article. Freeze the sweets for about 45 minutes, then bake at 375 until the skin gets paper-y. Don't poke holes ! The ice crystals will melt, creating steam inside the potato. Soft, fluffy, the best texture. 👍🏻
  • Mix the sweet spuds with peanut butter, oats, flax and honey; roll into little balls and freeze. Then dip the frozen balls in dark chocolate. Yum!

I love sweet potatoes, I've been liking it best microwaved, then scooping it out and adding butter, and salt. Served with pork chops or loin. YUM!!

My father would dig a hole in the back yard, put the sweet potatoes in it and cover it with pine straw. They would last all winter . We would have sweet potato mash (think grits) every morning.

I have boiling or microwaving them for the past couple of weeks as a night snack and got absolutely hooked. Last night i bought 2 kilos of some thin and long sweet potatoes with white yellowish inside. I microwaved them as usual and they were dry and awful

Best way I've ever done them is how my grandma did. In the oven low and a few hours. It seems to make them have the taste intensified.

    Thank you for the education....

I have sweet potatoes for breakfast every morning. I peal off their skin with a knife and then wash them before I put them in the rice cooker. It just takes around 20 minutes to boil them thoroughly in it. Easy and simple. As a big fan of cheese, I like to put a slice of cheese on top of sweet potatoes before eating. The sweet potatoes melts the cheese in the same way as the burger does it. What a delicious and healthy meal!

Clean, oil and wrap in foil individually. They turn out moist and not stringy. You don't need to add a thing to them. Yum!
  • Clean, Grease jacket with Crisco and bake at 325 degrees 1 hour...Yum Yum eat the jacket too..Best part

I make sure they look clean and buy the ones that seem heavy for their size. Don't oil, salt, pierce or wrap them. Bake at 350-400 until soft. Skin peels off easily. Taste very sweet and creamy, even without butter.
