It seems like the Super Mario World game over music is meant to sound like that. In a personal standpoint, it sounds sad. But also tells you to "chin up" and tells you good luck next time type of vibes.

Why did they make that death animation like that in the first several games? It just looks really weird/odd.

New Super Mario Bros Wii is my favourite. I mimic the voice, and my Mom HATES it. Like, say that she knows why people HATE working in retail jobs, and I do that "Oh-ho, nooooo!", she just straight up tells me that she doesn’t like it. It’s too funny.
