My Life Story

I hope I've articulated everything clearly in this video. If not, I'll clarify in comments. Thanks to everyone who appears in this video and thanks to everyone who watches this video!
Veritasium is of course a combination of the latin 'veritas' meaning truth, and the common element ending 'ium'. I guess this is my version of the 'draw my life' craze that rolled through YouTube many years ago. Except I wanted to tell my story with the actual moments, the photons, the stored magnetic states. There's something about that which is so important to me (because I think the alternative involves fooling yourself) which is why I'm so fascinated by film and video.
One of my inspirations for the name Veritasium came from the end of the poem Ode on a Grecian Urn by John Keats, in which he writes:
"Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know."

this guy talks about getting a phd like it’s nothing

Your “non-science” videos are just as wonderful as the rest. Thanks for the peek into the personal.

Watching this video in 2024, my eyes got teary especially the part you propose and then show us your kids and wife. Its such a beautiful thing to know that it all worked out in the end. This video makes a solid case for my intended transition from law to tech! We love you, Derek!

Loved it, Derek. I'm 64, and I know what it is to go for it and to fail. But there's a deeper truth than survivor bias; those of us who have fallen flat on our face time after time experience life in a way that those who play it safe will never understand. Sure, we might not be rich and we might not be famous. But I got something better instead. I got the journey. I wouldn’t trade the life I’ve lived for all the dreams I had when I was young.

I think it's wise to focus on family. Love you bro, great video.

WHY AM I CRYING ON A SCIENCE CHANNEL???
-
Sir, you are just wonder of the nature, whatever happens my request is to believe in yourself. Honors and Salutes to you and your family.

That feeling when you realize the Veritasium guy grew up in your same hometown and graduated from high school the same year. crazy!
-
So basically what he is trying to convey is :failure is better than the regret of not trying

Getting to this video 5 years late - but this channel has awoken a sincere interesting not necessarily in the subjects you talk about, but about learning. And I really appreciate that. Thanks, Derek (and team).

The line you said " keep going the job you like may not be created yet" got me spark, I like the paradox of statistical bias
-
7:16 "Sometimes its a blessing not to know how bad you are, if you knew, you would have quit"
-
"i feel like I've been stifled by 4 years of engineering" -every engineering graduate ever
-
"You can't be anything you want, but you can be everything you are." I can't remember who said this, but the phrase still reverberates with me. And now, it's 2022 and you're at 12 million subscribers. Congratulations and keep up the great work.
