Join Oliver Connor, a North Carolina falconer, as he takes to the fields and brush with his 360 gram passage Cooper's Hawk, and his energetic Vizla.

This bird was trained using the "Clicker training" method, as adapted by Oliver. They faced several obstacles, including a large gash wound to the bird's leg, that it had when it was trapped.

Obviously, this has turned out to be a phenomenal little bird!

Nice video. I got my first Cooper hawk when I was 12 and had him for five years. Quite an experience. That was back in the 1950s in Washington state. Thank you.
  • Another excellent video, thanks for posting! My favourite part is at 3:19, the way the bird turns, especially with the slow motion, is amazing. Such beautiful and agile creatures. Bradley

You have taken some lovely film of his flights, shows how energetic coopers hawks are.
  • I live in South Florida we have a good number of Cooper Hawk's also Red Shoulder Hawks. should start see Red Tails coming down for the winter. i saw a long tail hawk look like a cooper with extra long tail. and a rare sighting of a short tail Hawk. where i work the Building is 31 Stories. theres a pair of Falcons that come every year hope to get some videos to put on Facebook.
  • I've had Cooper's hawks coming to my little yard for about 10 years, feeding, bathing and sunning. The newest yearling male has become quite accustom to myself and allows me to get with six feet, since he sees me as not a threat. He watches the squirrels feed from my hand and the crows and other song birds landing within feet of myself. He has a perch in a large prickly bush that he hides in everyday for hours on end. I don't mind him hunting the collared doves and the hundred other birds I have in my yard, but have you ever heard of a hawk eating meat from a decoy or another kind of eating station?

I don't have a falcon or hawk or know anyone in the sport, but I'm interested in the sport and i was wondering weather it would be alright if I attended a field meet in my area

what keeps him from flying away from you while you are on these hunts
  • @Longwinger
Have you taken anything with him yet? If not , get a bird launcher and put some flight conditioned Bob White quail in it. Let your Vizla point it and then launch. Shouldn't take long before he's killing everything in sight.

Do you actually hunt with the Hawk? It's great to see him flying around and coming back to you but are they not for actually stalking and killing small game?
  • I was wonder if apprentices get to trap a hawk and have there own hawk to train while they are also being trained by a sponser.

They look very much like the European Sparrow Hawks. Are they similar?
