Spoken Word by James Hetfield:

I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or a dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there's not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me
Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel

But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live
Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me

Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God, help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, please God, help me, help me

Darkness imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

It's hard to fathom Apocalyptica's journey after this. From being called a cheap cover brand, to playing Wagner with orchestra and circus performances all the way to being the most respected cello-driven band collaborating with the band that started them. This is incredible. Hats off to you, men. Rock on! 🤘🤘

There's something very impressive about seeing a cello play a thrash metal solo. Probably the coolest thing I've seen done with an instrument in my life.

My neighbours are going to love this song....

I love James narrating his lyrics instead of singing them. It makes it feel more personal like reading a letter that was written before he lost his limbs, hearing and sight by an explosion. But knowing that it’s just happening inside his head. It’s heavy

Although people Commented they didn’t like James speaking instead of singing, that made this version special to me! It made it has its own flavor. If he had sang like he’s used to sing, it would be just another cover with James making it sound as the original version. The fact that he spoke the lyrics made me focused on the drama of the lyric itself instead of the vocal melody, making the song look as a movie. Awesome version!

This is like being in a medieval tavern and some ranger is telling one of his adventures. In the background some bard is giving it all on the stage with his cello 😂😂😂

There's a part of me that wishes James had actually sung on this, but it doesn't matter, not when you hear all the rest of it. Somehow he managed to ignore a vocal melody he's sung hundreds (if not thousands) of times, and make the delivery of each line meaningful. That takes tremendous work and effort. There are hints of Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits in his voice. It sounds fantastic. The orchestration and every other decision made on this song make it new and original. Having a fresh take on a classic is no easy task, but this does it to perfection. It's almost more of a musical art piece than a song, and that's more than okay.

James' voice is giving me Leonard Cohen vibes, especially from You want it darker, amazing.
  • @AJulaimid
James could easily have a legendary voice over career.. damn
  • @lynxmaxx
Now we need a LIVE version of this.
  • @RevoltingRudi
one with metallica, having officially bass guitar in it, and chellos and shit. what a time to be alive.
  • This isn’t a song to me. This an entire freakin play, full of emotion and story telling. I didn’t like it at first, but once you realize this is something you aren’t listening to in the gym but rather on full volume in the living room with a glass of blackened bourbon; it’s an entirely different experience. This is an entire freaking journey.

    Absolutely!!.....innovation, imagination, something old,something new.....what a piece of genius.....
  • @JMK571
I dig it. They did their own thing with it and made it their own, including the choice to have James narrate the story instead of singing the lyrics. Metallica has done plenty of covers where they’ve changed things up and made a song their own. I think Apocolytica has done the same thing with their version of One. Good job!
  • @savashistan
Metallica: One is my war song! Apocalyptica: Hold my cello in the ruins!
  • @marshavia8558
Absolutely love this! 40 year Metallica fan here, I’ll be 70 this year and this gets me going, lol! ❤️
  • @Norm6671
This is one of the all-time best covers I've ever heard. It broke new ground while still being true to the original. Absolutely beautiful.
