Cameron Crowe has said that if he knew this scene would not have been in the movie, he wouldn't have made it. They couldn't secure the rights to the song and so it was cut. It's available on the special edition DVD set but you still have to play your own copy of the song along with the video. I've merged the two together so you can enjoy the scene the way it was intended.

Who is the guy in green? That's Jesse Caron, playing the role of Darryl, the boyfriend of the older sister, played by Zooey Deschanel. The only other time we see him is when the sister is leaving home. Darryl is helping pack up the car. (I can't imagine how bummed Jesse was when he found out this scene was cut.)

How did you find this link? In the past couple weeks, it's gotten thousands of views.

I don't think the film needs this scene at all, but I am glad it exists this way. Existing as a bonus to watch afterwards makes it a real joy.
  • The best song to get asked to slow dance to at the 7th grade school dance with my cute boyfriend. Because it’s so long. 😊 I’m 60 now and this song still makes me smile.

I think this is a profound scene about a kid trying to get his mother to understand what moves him. He cannot say it in words, but only show her what touches his soul.
  • To me, this is about that time that we all played a song for someone, hoping that it would cause the same reaction and emotional response in them, that it has in us.
  • The scene made me feel like I was listening to stairway to heaven for the first time again

To have been at a Zeppelin concert in the early 70's was to be part of history. No band before and none since, commanded such intense passion. And like all passions, burned intensely, the lingering embers still glowing all these many years later.

I see why this scene was cut. Would have insanely slowed down the films pace, but it becomes quite charming and shows how music can unite people and cause them visual join and the inability to move, groove, or dance, once it's inside you. Brings people together.

Green shirt's air band technique is on point. Seamlessly switches between air guitar and air drums, especially during the build up before the final verse. So funny.
  • “He who jealously guards his fears quietly yearns to bring them about.” Love it 😊

I never thought I'd feel so moved just by watching a bunch of people listen to a song. I don't think this scene fit the movie, it would've killed the pace and there's no development in it, but I love the way it perfectly captures the characters' love for the music, which is really what the whole movie was about.

Here we are 20 years later, one of my favorite movies and never knew this existed - so happy to have this bit of a back story!!!!

I can see why this scene was dropped from the original release but as a fan of the movie its excellently moving.

The guy in green is Darryl, the sister's (Zooey Deschanel's) boyfriend. Poor dude, this would have been his best scene and it got cut. The other two ladies are the teacher and school counselor. The woman to Darryl's left is Cameron Crowe's mother.

OMG!! I'm shaking, tears are running and I never realized how much this song resonated in my life until now. It was played when I went under the knife in the Emergency Room's OR on New Year's night 1976 after getting shot in the abdomen in Memphis in a drive-by shooting. I requested this when the anesthesiologist asked what music I wanted to hear. I asked for "Stairway to Heaven". I was 14 years old. I died on the OR table and the Kelly Team had to be called to revive me. I just can't believe the emotions coming over me experiencing each note of this song while watching this clip! Thank you so much for sharing this.
  • My favorite scene is at the motel and the desk clerk tells William "your mother called. She freaked me out"

This is so beautiful, people never just sit and listen to albums anymore. Music has become the backgrounds, the playlist, to our lives instead of an escape and expression.

The double meaning in the lines that spark reactions from Mom are excellent. "There's still time to change the road you're on", "When I look to the west..." No one can resist the groove of the greatest rock song ever written for long.
