Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2018 | Lisbon, built with the riches of Portugal's New World discoveries, has a rustic charm. We'll remember great navigators, eat lots of cod, enjoy pastries hot out of the oven, stroll the city's back lanes and its reinvigorated waterfront, marvel at an exquisite church built with spice taxes, and enjoy some soulful fado music. Then we'll side-trip to Sintra to explore the fanciful castles of Portuguese royalty and climb hilltop ramparts with grand views. No matter what people say Portugal is with no doubt one of the most relaxing and beautiful countries in the world. Besides the country being small there is so much diversity especially food and sightseeing so beautiful.

I am Brazilian and this video brings tear in my eyes looking all architecture that I really admire in my country and makes me realize how Portuguese is the splendor in the best of Brazil that's fading away with time. Looks like in Portugal this memory is still really vivid. Great video!

My favourite city to visit. I've been visiting since 1983 when I was intrigued by a comment in the 'Hitchhikers Guide To Europe" that suggested it was an interesting time to visit the country after its revolution of 1974. The city that I visited then was a bit downtrodden with all of the public transport (trams and buses) dating from the 1920s and 1930, but it was utterly charming. At that time, all of the city squares, that you see in this video, were car parks. The city was buzzing but a bit dirty. It was certainly off the beaten track. It was fairly hard to get to - not many affordable flights then, and it was easier to travel by train or bus. At that time, a lot of the population had emigrated to work in France. The city has certainly cleaned up a lot but I do miss some of the old Lisbon that has gone forever. When I first visited, there was no charge to visit the Castle and there seemed to be some sort of menagerie there while the locals played cards. There was also a tram (trolley) that went pretty much straight up to the castle. Sadly a lot of it has gone, and you have to take a bus (or walk). Still, it is always nice to go back from time to time.

As a brazilian, I love Portugal architecture and food, to imagine that 2 centuries ago Rio de Janeiro was similar to this... I feel ashamed everytime I see to what it is now
