On March 19, 1982, Randy Rhoads the heavy metal guitarist from Ozzy Osbourne's band died in a plane crash in Leesburg Florida.
Among those killed were Randy Rhoads, Rachel Youngblood the seamstress for the band, and Andrew Aycock, the tour bus driver with an expired pilot's license. We will find Flying Baron Estates which is the location of the crash and discuss the events of that tragic day.

Randy is still my favorite guitarist of all time! He died young but accomplished so much in that short time. His solos and riffs are still attempted by new guitar players!

As a huge Ozzy Osbourne fan thank you for covering this. Rest easy Randy
  • We're going to have to work on your approach speeds. Used up alot of runway on that landing at Baron : ) Good topic and tour. I was one of the last people to see Randy perform. He was in Atlanta on the tour shortly before this. I was lucky and got seats close to the stage. During a solo, his high E string broke. I saw it snap. He continued right through the lead switching to a lower key using the strings he had. Unbelievable musician.
  • This is the second opportunity that I have had to hear the history you present. I love it and share accordingly. Thank you for your work.
  • Man.....😔 All I can think is what he could of become if he didn't die that day. So much talent and like so many young people in the music industry taken too soon 💔

Might want to consider a video on Otis Redding's 1967 plane crash into Lake Monona, Wisconsin near Madison. Madison and the University of Wisconsin are a beautiful fly-over.

My personal Diary I wrote the next day after the last show of Randy Rhoads in Knoxville Tennessee! RIP RANDY! YOU ARE SORELY MISSED! OZZY OSBOURNE: THURSDAY MARCH 18TH 1982: RANDY RHOADS LAST SHOW AT THE KNOXVILLE CIVIC COLISEUM: DIARY OF A MADMAN TOUR: Upon entering the coliseum after buying my tour shirt and ticket 🎫 stub processing: I noticed the stage was set up like a medieval castle with arches and bats 🦇 flying around the top of them. There was a staircase leading up to Tommy Aldridge’s Drumkit. The top left of Tommy was where Donny Airey’s keyboards were set up. Stage right and left had to cages with which Randy Rhoads would appear from the floor stage right and Rudy Sarzo stage left. OZZY had a throne of which he would appear out of to start the show to Over the Mountain. Tommy had his drum tech dressed as an Executioner stand beside his kit with his arms crossed. The staircase had a small section that would open and a small dwarf named: Ronnie (after Ronnie James Dio the new singer for Black Sabbath-replacing OZZY) and hand OZZY towels and water between songs. Little did we all know that later in the show: the executioner would bring the dwarf out to be hung from the rafters and later he would cut off his head using a guillotine! At the end of the show OZZY climbed onto a giant mechanical hand that OZZY stood on top of and launched unspecified meat 🥩 🍖 into the audience! Of course it was all an a theatrical act as the dwarf appeared to take a bow with OZZY and the band. When OZZY smiled we noticed he put vampire 🧛‍♀️ teeth in! We laughed hard! I went to the show with my friend Richard and his older brother Greg who was 18 at the time. We were 13. Greatest show on earth! Richard and I were both terrified and thrilled at what we witnessed! Unfortunately the next morning all that excitement and energy was gone as we learned that Randy Rhoads perished in a plane crash in Florida. Richard and I played drums but Greg played guitar 🎸 and he definitely took it the hardest! One of the greatest guitarist of our generation and had just won the new guitarist of the year by Guitar Player magazine. Rest In Peace Randy Rhoads your music lives on! Sincerely, Gary Lagstrom

I was riding my motorcycle when a large amount of fire trucks & rescue vehicles went by in the other direction . I wondered what happened but I didn't find out until I went to my motel room in Leesburg and on the news was all about the crash and the fact that they buzzed the bus & hit it. Speculation was randy was flying the plane. It was THE story for weeks.

Some of the photos of the crash site are new to me. Where did you get them from?

I’ve seen and read everything you can find about this tragedy for the last 40 years. I believe Ayecock had a heart attack, or he just got to low and slow and stalled it. Remember, he was trying to allow Randy to take some pictures, meaning he may have slowed it down and stalled. I have yet to find out if the flaps were extended or retracted. I think most evidence was burned up, because the FAA report does not say a darn thing, other than it was an accident. I just wish Randy would have never got on that thing. I miss him every day…. R.I.P.
  • Pilots licenses don't expire. He may not have been checked out in this plane, not current for flight, been suspended or medically disqualified. I still have and use the license I earned in the 1970s.
