This has been picked up on elsewhere and I have to admit I've noticed it myself. It may be that our recent summers have tended to be cool and wet as a result we haven't had as many of the warmer humid spells that eventually break down into thunderstorms as cooler air moves in. There have still be some notable outbreaks, in both June 2012 and 2011.

It's so weird. Whenever lightning strikes are so close, no camera ever seems to pick it up properly . I found the same thing.
