He’s repeating something he overheard workers in an appliance store saying, with that offensive slur. Well, the whole song is based on that encounter. He’s not saying it himself. It’s what he heard them saying. And they’re the ones that deliver and install the appliances. And they’re jealous of how easy rock stars have got it.
  • @Dervanism
That’s STING on the intro vocals as well as thru the song.
  • The lyrics are from the POV of manual workers, lamenting how musicians get their money easier than they do.
  • Yes, Clayton has it correct: As I explained when I suggested this track previously -- Mark was in a hardware store; on one whole wall of the store there were TVs tuned to MTV (Music Television); he overheard the workers making derisive and griping comments about the men in the videos and how easy those guys had it compared to their own blue-collar jobs (moving TVs and refrigerators etc.); Mark grabbed a pen and paper and wrote their remarks down verbatim, and they became the lyrics of the song. Given that they (Dire Straits) are musicians themselves, singing the lyrics in an MTV video, it's also somewhat self-parodic and good natured! Moreover, it's fitting because in contrast to some the 'glam rock' of the time, Dire Straits was 'pub rock'. As to the 'offensive' word at issue: 1) That was the word used by the blue collar workers themselves in the hardware store about the guys in the MTV videos (2) it was very common parlance at that time, and (3) it was used more to suggest 'poser' or 'pretty boy' (glam rock) rather than homosexual (i.e. gay guys wouldn't be concerned about getting 'chicks' for free, would they?). Context is everything! Lastly, am thrilled to watch you go down the Dire Straits rabbit hole!

Can't go wrong listening to Mark Knopfler play the guitar!!! The riff for this song is just absolutely filthy!!!

Im 72 and it has taken about 60 years to come to the realization that from the 60's through the 80's so many of the top bands were British and I didn't even know! I mean yeah, the British Invasion but somewhere along the line I really blew it. Thanks to Great Britain for all the wonderful top notch music❤.
  • The high vocals saying “I want my MTV” is Sting, from the Police. The Police are a whole other 80s rabbit hole you could go down.
  • @petervenkman69
So as others have pointed out, this is Sting doing the "I want my MTV" part. This is because the Police did an ad for MTV where they said that very line. On top of that the music used for "I want my MTV" section is actually borrowed from the Police's "Don't stand so close to me" written by Sting... because of this Sting gets credit as co-writer of the music. Apparently Dire Straits was in Monserrat recording the album and Mark said something like "You know it would be great to have Sting on this" and someone in the Studio said (again something like)... "Oh, he's on holiday surfing just down the beach." so they went and told him. When Sting saw what they were working on, he told Mark "you've nailed it with this one." (again again something like). There are several versions of this story out there, this is based on Mark's recollections from several interviews I have seen.
  • The reason people are watching you is because you’re doing a great analysis of all styles of music and your wonderment of the older music is amazing and fun to watch. 😊❤
  • “I want my MTV!!!” was a big campaign slogan for mtv around that time so Dire Straits used it in their video…genius!!
  • @67theavatar
They're saying they are doing mundane work and it's boring and laborious but the guy on the guitar does little moves with his fingers on the strings and gets millions(and so he should cos he's awesome). We wish we had a talent like his !!!!

I loved growing up in the 80s and 90s. I miss it dearly
  • @RioParadiso
THIS IS ONE PROBABLY IS ON THE TOP 10 HITS OF THE ENTIRE 80 DECADE... A MASTERPIECE
  • @Karen_in_Canada
You are right! The Brits owned the music for a long time! Pink Floyd, Genesis, Phil Collins, Dire Straits. The list goes on and on.
  • @stevezeppieri
“I want my MTV!” Back in the 80s MTV was a brand new channel that helped revolutionize the music industry via the music video. This was one of the first videos that really shined on that channel. MTV is still around but they haven’t been strictly music in over 20 years
