It's April 1918 and in the trenches of Northern France the Battle of the Lys, also known as the Fourth Battle of Ypres is underway. 22 year old Aníbal Augusto Milhais from the Portuguese Expeditionary corps finds himself in the midst of the battle. What happened next was an incredible display of courage and bravery that saved the lives of many of his companions both Scottish and Portuguese. After they retreated he continued fighting on alone until he ran out of ammunition. He was given a commendation which described his action as being worth a million men. After which his nickname became "Soldier Millions".

It's amazing that the Portuguese answered a call to arms based on a 503-year old treaty, with Britain.

Brilliant, both the film and the hero himself. Sadly Portugal's role in the Great War is all but forgotten; they suffered dreadfully during 'Operation Michael', so it's good to see them being commemorated. Milhais himself achieved wonders - his name should be up there alongside Alvin York and the other great names of his era. Thank you for telling his story, and in such a magnificent film.

"You are Milhais, but you are worth millions of soldiers" Is a phrase that makes more sense in portuguese, because "millions" in portuguese is "milhões", so the original phrase was like "Você é apenas Milhais, mas vale milhões de soldados"
  • Aníbal may be worth a million soldiers, but Yarbhub is worth millions of subs with such good quality animations and good history topics

As a Portuguese, I would like to thank you for highlighting the bravery of soldier Milhais!
  • Hello I am one of the great-grandchildren of soldier millions it is very good to know that in other countries my great-great-grandfather is known, great animation an very good good work.
  • As a Portuguese WWI enthusiast, this was absolutely amazing! I only knew him with the film "Soldado Milhões" (2018) which tells both this part of his life and post-war time, not sure if the post-war one was historically accurate but it was still great since we lack First World War films. I liked the detail of a Portuguese soldier praying to what I think it is Our Lady of Fatima, it could possibly be another marian statue though, since the Fatima miracle occured late in the World War, but it was very accurate since most Portuguese soldiers were very religious. It is sad though that this is probably the only known Portuguese recognition during that war that is recorded. But I think it would be great if Sabaton did a song about him with your video, like you guys did with Christmas Truce! Think about it :) Also, fun fact! He called his Lewis gun "Luisinha", more or less meaning "Little Louise".

It’s often said how Yarnhub’s visual effects have improved. As much is true of course, but I always find the camera work and direction impressive. It’s easy to get that wrong, especially in 3D graphics, to make it look as if someone is actually operating a camera within the setting. This with the changing focus on the “lens”, it’s a full package. Great stuff and keep it up!

I am a Vietnam vet and I sit here with tears in my eyes. What a valiant, selfless soldier. I witnessed the same many times.

This animation is better than some movies at this point.

The Scottish Major that Augusto saved was probably so thankful to him. Like, he was alone, stuck and was awaiting death when, out of nowhere, a lifesaver appeared. The Major was so lucky.

I'm a descendant from João Ferreira do Amaral who said Milhais was worth millions. My grandfather used to tell me this story when I was younger!

The Portuguese soldier praying at the start of the video was wonderfully done. Great detail and animation, and I’m so glad it was included! The dancing rounds during the German artillery attack and leaves in the forest also stood out as exceptionally well done. And as always, thanks for sharing some of the ‘lesser known’ stories from war. I wasn’t aware that Portuguese forces took part in World War I but now want to learn more about their participation after watching this video!

This battle caused heavy casualties to the Portuguese Expeditionary Corp. They were on the frontlines longer than they should have only to be decimated on the day of their relieve.

This are the stories that belong in a 2:30h movie. Also, austanding animation and direction. As someone who follow from the start I'm very much impressed of how far you've gotten in not much time.
