testing restored Klaeger Fortuna hacksaw

Published 2020-10-17
First test cut on my restored Klaeger Fortuna power hacksaw.

I did not attempt a perfect full "like new" restoration. A few parts had to be replaced and after removal of the old paint I gave it a new Mipa 2K PUR paint.

As 3-phase power is not available in my basement workshop, I run an old 1.1 kW 3-phase motor with a 50 ”F phase shifter capacitor as a 3-phase converter (basically a Steinmetz circuit).
I tried to operate the 370 W motor of the saw with single phase power using the Steinmetz circuit. However the torque was insufficient to start the motor in some situations. The 3-phase converter solves this problem perfectly.

During the video editing I realized that the eccentric drive wheel should run counterclockwise. The saw works anyways, but the issue will be fixed.

00:10 original condition before restoration
00:25 state after restoration
00:35 3-phase motor operated with single phase and 3-phase converter
01:25 setting up for a test cut
02:17 starting the 3-phase converter (idler motor)
02:25 starting test cut
04:45 auto-stop when cut is finished
04:50 done

Machine shops have nice cross-rhythms in them and the smell of cutting oil is a kind of perfume 😉

Very simple 3 phase conversion, nice...great looking machine too
  • Hey Harald, very nice restoration. If you want the saw running in the right direction just swap phase L1 and L2. Looks better :) That directional arrow is on every Fortuna saw because there where models with a liquid cooling pump attached, this obviously needs to run the right direction. I got one with this pump

The direction of the motor is really important! It won't cut very fast when it's turning in the wrong direction. Nice saw! I just found one of these today....needs a bit of work...
  • Hej Harald, I am beginning the same restauration project so I am very glad you already made this video. Sadly the previous owner lost the adjustment weight on top, may I ask how much your weight does weigh?

Does flipping the orientation of the saw blade mitigate the rotation?

Hi Harald, is it possible to send you this KlÀger Fortuna to do the restauration? We have the same one and looking for someone who can do it. Maybe you can contact me.
  • Top, Maschinchen, tut seit x Jahren bei uns ihren Dienst... sieht nur nicht si schön aus...
