Training to Join the Military - Featuring Ret. Marine Raider MSgt Cody Alford

Published 2024-06-10
The military isn't about being a social media hero; it's about resilience, hard work, and dedication.

In this video, Nick Koumalatsos and Ret. Marine Raider MSgt Cody Alford discusses what you should be doing to prepare to join the military.
Success doesn't happen overnight; it requires dedication and perseverance. Don't shy away from seeking guidance and learning from setbacks. We delve into the importance of cultivating a strong mindset, avoiding early bad habits, and embracing diversity in backgrounds. Prioritize physical fitness, language skills, and historical knowledge as foundational elements. Remember, it's the combination of mental and physical preparedness that sets the stage for success in the military.

I liked how they emphasized the need for genuine effort and patience over instant results.

The comparison between training back then and now with social media was really insightful.
  • The level of commitment and hard work described here is astonishing!
  • @ChadBarl
Their anecdotes about struggling with swimming training were relatable and funny.

First, I just love you guys! Thanks for all you do! I'm a mom and retired USAF MSgt, and my son entered the USMC as infantry about five years ago. He decided, even before enlisting, that he wanted to go as far as possible as a Marine. He assumed the mindset of a sponge, adopted a zero-drama, just-do-it approach, and remained humble enough to learn, learn, learn. He is now a Raider. He would call me and fill me in on his training (to the degree he could) or after weeks of being in the field, and I could hear the exhaustion in his voice. I would ask him, "Are you still happy with your decision to join the Marines?" He always answered, "One hundred percent." And recently, he even said, "Mom, I can't believe they pay me to do this." Thank you, Nick. Your work here brings me closer to my son's world, and I appreciate you!

The stories about their boot camp experiences are intense!

I was the Marine OSO in NYC. Resonated so much with the “go find a pool” reply to the kid who says “I don’t have access to a pool.” The MARSOC thing was huge too. There’s no problem with having big goals, but they totally gloss over the close fight— OCS, TBS, MOS school, first tour. Many frustrating moments on that duty.

It’s interesting to hear how they dealt with not being great at everything initially.

I try to join the army but I got really sick during basic and they send me home after 3 month of being stuck at reception doing nothing so now in August I’m starting college so I’m going to do good at college so I can commission in Marine Corps through the LPC / OCS route
