Ayam Cemani is a rare breed of chicken that is completely black, including its organs, muscles, and bones. This chicken originates in Indonesia, where many locals keep the bird as a treasured pet. Cemani, pronounced che-MA-ni in Indonesian and seh-MA-ni by many English speakers, comes from Sanskrit and means “jet black.” As a result of a condition called fibromelanosis, Cemani chickens have 10 times as much melanin as most chicken breeds. While the price varies, a high-quality Ayam Cemani can sell for over $6,000, and a single egg can fetch as much as $16. But what makes these chickens so special? And why are they so expensive?

I own one of these Chickens, he's a really good rooster, protected his hens from dogs and other wildlife. Love that bird.

It's so interesting that they donate the first eggs for healers and such. Then the healers make it free as well. Nice to see people taking care of each other with no money involved.

Here in India there is a similar breed Kadaknath, They are quite larger than the regular chickens and also tend to be quite aggresive. Their meat is also black.

Ive eaten it once at a Chinese restaurant. Taste like any good old free range chicken. Not fatty. But it's really all black. Even the intestines, organs and whatever else is black. Pretty metal 🤘🏻

Brings a whole new meaning to Big Black Chicken 😅

These chickens get better healthcare than most Americans 😂

Best brooding chicken I have. She consistently hatches at least 3 sets of chicks a year. She last hatched 11 of 12 eggs.

I’ve always been curious about this breed. I learned a lot from this.
  • I came from Temanggung, a region where these chickens originated. My late uncle even owned a Cemani farm 😊

My grandmother mother used to have a flock of these chickens. They're all black to the meat and she gave me two chicks but when it was time to go back home, Mom told me animals are not allowed aboard the ship. I was devastated because I only go there very very rarely, even now I haven't go there close to 15 years.

So interesting - and the facility in NJ is immaculate. It makes me want to do this
  • Pretty neat to see the craft done from two different perspectives and locales.
  • I own one of these. He is a rooster. He always protec the hens and doesn't afraid of anything. What a champ

I didn't know these chickens could cost this much. I'm from the southern Philippines where these chickens aren't rare though still uncommon. I used to get these once in a while when I ask to buy for 'native' chickens. My supplier source them from highland farmers who doesn't make any distinction between these and the other local breeds. They are all specially good for making soup/stock based dishes but i have since asked to leave out these black boned ones. Kids don't like them
  • as Indonesian, never in a million years I would expect to see Cemani chicken farm in USA and yes Ayam means chicken. so saying Ayam Cemani chicken is like saying Bank of America Bank 😁
  • Owning one of this chicken is like family heredity being passed down from generation, Amazing bird, the eggs taste great 👍🏻

In the Phil’s we call them ‘ulikba’. All black feathers, meat, bones but it is not expensive as on this video. But is a lot tastier than any cheken I have eaten. It is rare but the price is the same with the native chicken.
