I saw him in a Chicago bar in the 90s. He was old, and had to sit the whole performance. At one point, he was heckled by some dude at a table who didn’t know any better. Coe stopped cold in the middle of the song and glared at the kid and said in a flat tone, “I’ll whip you, boy.” The kid shut up, and the show went on.

The fact that I can't listen to this song on major music platforms now is sad. It's an absolute classic.

I started listening to David Allan coe when I was in the United States Army in the late 1970s. Never stopped since then!
-
This song was essentially the theme music to my tour in the USMC 05-09 Iraq. Memorial Day weekend is here and so am I. Cheers 🍻

I grew up a whole lot like this song. My dad was one tuff ass s.o.b. There wasn't anything he couldn't do. "Can't" was not a functional word in his vocabulary. He was an intimidator and nobody messed with him. I feared him, yet was drawn to his grit, gumption, and never quit hard work ethics. He pushed me hard, and that challenged me to do more, and better ! This country needs a comeback of real men like that. 🇺🇸

This song is my daddy to a T. He is USMC Vietnam vet and raised us about 2 hours from Dallas on 30 acres. That was the grocery store. I didn’t see a real grocery store until I was 11. We worked the fields and bailed hay and rounded up cattle and hogs. He is the best man I ever known.

This should be played at every NBA game!
