In this episode, we explore the massive building of the Baker Hotel. Built in 1929 as a large spa destination for the mineral water in the area, it was extremely advanced with cold mineral water pumped into all 450 rooms. After the discovery of new medications in the 40's and 50's the popularity of mineral water's healing properties drastically declined thus causing the hotel to struggle to find guests. The building has been closed since 1972 and has endured a lot of decay.

Be really cool if you'd include pictures of how these places previously looked back in its prime

Never a fan of vandalism, but I have to admit...the faces on the washing machines made me laugh.

The Baker Hotel is being renovated with a projected reopening in 2022. Maybe you can do a followup when it reopens.
-
UPDATE: THEY HAVE RESTORED SO MUCH ALREADY, AND YES THEY ARE REPLICATING THE ORIGINAL HOTEL. THEY TOOK OLD PLASTER, OLD MIRRORS REPLICATIONS.. SO YES IT IS GOING TO BE OPEN AGAIN.

Guys, I have watched a lot of your videos and I enjoy them a lot. I am 61 years old and my father, oldest brother, and his wife all have been exposed to asbestos. Asbestos takes a long time to begin destroying the lining in your lungs. That lining is the thing that transmits oxygen into your bloodstream. Asbestos encapsulates the tube like structures in the lining and blocks the oxygen from entering your bloodstream. The effect is you slowly suffocate and there is no cure. My father began experiencing the effects of it in 1995-96, As he aged it became more of a struggle to get O2 in. Luckily he had a massive heart attack and he passed before it became too bad. My sister in law has a partially atrophic lung which has about 30% capacity now. The fibers are very very small and you could have it flying all around you in these old buildings and not even realize it. I know the masks are bulky and hot at times but you need to seriously consider using them in some of these places. Stay safe.

My great great grandmother was a maid at the Baker Hotel in the 30s. I also own a chair that sat in the lobby during the hotel's prime!

"It sounds like there are people around every corner" I am the night time janitor at a 100 year old movie palace and I know exactly what you mean.

The distorted music played at the beginning is from Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
-
It was recently bought and is going to be renovated soon, I hope they keep the 20s architecture.

If I were a cop and recieved a call to go there and investigate I'd just eat donuts in the parking lot for 20 minutes and say it's clear.

Thank you for doing this. I'm 59, I've wanted to see inside this hotel all my life, I've been passing by it on one road trip or another all my life as I was born in Abilene and we had people in MW at one time. I'm so glad this popped up in my recommended and even though I know this has been up awhile I just discovered it and did want to leave a comment. Oh, and new subbie.

My grandfather was a bell hop here when he was 15! I am glad the renovation process has begun. I'd love to walk the same grounds as young Jack. Loved my papa.
-
I'm always scared that these guys are going to fall through the floor in one of these buildings

Even after many decades of being abandoned, you can still see the beauty of this majestic hotel
-
This place must have been a sight to behold in its heyday.
-
My brother is a plumbing engineer and is working for the company that will be doing the rehab. I can’t begin to imagine the cost of bringing this incredible building back to its original grandeur.

The 'glitter' in the ceiling are iridescent iris flakes. It was added to spray-on applications of the original popcorn ceilings. This was popular in the 1950s to 1980, something different, helped to insulate noise and cover up cracks in the older ceilings.
-
Update: The Baker Hotel was awarded 67 million to restore it and should reopen sometime in 2022

This amazing hotel is actually being almost completely rebuilt as you read this, they have a few floors gutted and have electricity and no windows as they are trying to preserve as much as the original building as they could. All of the motels are completely booked because of how many people they have working on the hotel and there is no sign of the owners wanting to quiet building anytime soon as they are both excited for this

At long last, found a sensible channel that doesn't involve the explorers screaming and running off, due to 'ghosts', etc. Great vid guys!. Thank u for sharing, love from England. U just got a new subscriber! X 😀
