Vinyl Replacement Windows - A Problem You Should Know About

Published 2024-05-08
A while back a tech told me that old single pain windows with good storm windows was nearly as efficient as vinyl replacement windows. What that tech was talking about was the draftiness of old vs new.

Well, vinyl windows are simply easier to operate, better to clean, and all around quieter......however, the devil is in the jambs .....where most older homes had no insulation fitted during construction.

For a warm and energy efficient home, you want to stop the drafts and fill and spaces with insulation that prevents air from circulating. Simple rule of thumb.
Easier said than done.

Lets me know what ideas you have had in the past.

tHanks for watching....Good luck with your window projects...let me know how they went!

  • I installed some “pre hung” doors and windows at my parents house, run of the mill Lowe’s fair “off the shelf” type stuff. The wood that they used has already rotted to the point you can dig in to it with your finger. It was primed, painted and caulked to seal out the weather. All voids were sealed with insulation.
  • Spray foam is your friend to get you out of jams like these. I did that to my last house pulled the trim off all the windows and sealed them. Lots of foam less drafts.
  • #14👍🏼 Sounds like the same chopper that was going over us last night at 9:30pm!! 😮 Happy hump day, mi amore💖💋

DAwR…. Let me see if if I got this right ? New Windows, tho very nice, don’t always get you “out of a Jamb” ….🤓
  • Yup Dont forget to check the sides where the old window weights were thats a big old void.
  • @Dalesworkshop
BTW I replaced a window seal that had quality rot like that, and made a video of it, YouTube taught me how to do it.
  • People just don't pay attention to voids. Stuff insulation in and it makes a big difference! Must be nice to have your own helicopter, get dropped off to do some repairs and not have to deal with traffic 👍😎🤣😂🤣😂

  • My house has replacement vinyl windows and they leak like crazy. They whistle when the wind blows hard. Maybe someday I’ll do something about it

That is some quality rot you got there, and I like your repair it should do well with the draft,. However you should watch that step to the missing brace. All in all you did a good job and you can't see it from the street., So I think you are O K.
  • U know ur doing it wrong. The next guy behind you will not have anything to complain about. 😡
