The flooding completely destroyed huge sections of the road, and made this entire area completely inaccessible to even the most capable 4x4 vehicles. This is Four Mile Creek, along Four Mile Road, maybe 5 miles west of Boulder Colorado. 9/17/2013
I don't have any official numbers, but just being familiar with the creek, I would guesstimate that there is about 15 times more water flowing in the creek than is typical for this time of year, and probably 5 times more than peak flow for any average year.
[if someone does have the actual numbers, please message me with them and I will update]
What you are seeing in this video is the reconstruction of the creek bed, to restore it to the pre-flood path. These excavator operators started miles down the road, and have restored the path of the creek up to this point. It was a pleasure to watch them perform this restoration work; diverting the water away from the road, and effectively beginning the reconstruction process.
The operator who is working from within the creek is especially skilled and it is mesmerizing to watch him work.

Looks like fun! When I was a kid I really liked digging in streams of water trying to make them change direction, or build small dams

hard to believe i used 14 minutes to watch this , and the most amazing part is that i have enjoyed watching !

He is so gentle when he empties the bucket. I bet he is a great lover.

Thank you for ALL of these videos. We live half a mile above Poorman turn off. We could not find any news of Fourmile until we came across your videos on YouTube. Thank you, Thank you

The little one at 7:40... "Look dad, i'm helping too! Look what I brought! Look!", so adorable.

This crew of professionals , diligently took great care for the environment and removed the rubble In the River and correctly handled the situation. Great job 👍.thank you

Anyone can operate an excavator, just like playing video games, the difference is training and this fellow certainly this was his first time dealing with a blocked stream. The bucked clears the canal perpendicular to the water flow pulling the rocks and sand towards the excavator, advancing one bucket width each time.

the loader operator is certainly getting massive bucket loads to help

I lived in Four Mile Canyon when I went to college in Boulder. After a heavy rain, I would watch Boulder Creek and Four Mile Creek rise. But it was nowhere near this much!! This backhoe operator is a damn fine worker, IMHO. It looks like he is really getting the job done.

These folks are clueless as to what the hell they are doing. That operator is just throwing that bucket around like crazy. He has no idea what he's doing.

I love watching mother nature remind people this is her land, we are simply guests here.
-
it look like they just dont have any idea what they're doing or what to do more than just keep digging at the same spot
-
GREAT video, what they do is a craft, true experts....

Okay, I understand what he is up to. He isn't relieving flooding where he is digging, building a dam and all, but he is digging deeper into the creek to increase the flow to relieve flooding up stream. My older brother and I used to do this same thing back when we were boys playing with our Tonka Toys. We would then go to hang off the sides of our bunk bed pretending to be lineman working on the electrical lines.

Dream job right there. I would love to do that kind of work

My cousin Wesley Quinlan was killed when his car was swept off the road & turned upside down in the creek. His girlfriend was killed after escaping the car only to drown in the raging water. Wesley got out of the car to help her & they were both found the next day. This is my Facebook posting... Wesley Quinlan 2013 My heart is full of pride & sadness with the loss of our cousin taken so young. Wesley showed his true mettle and proved he was the best of this strong family when tragedy struck. It is hard to understand this loss but I am comforted knowing there is another hero in heaven looking over us! My thoughts and prayers are with Ron, Glenda, Wayne, Sue & the entire Quinlan family.

I have a desk job so I don't try to sound like I am an expert in driving excavators..... I'm just saying that. No names mentioned... Instead I really admire those who have such skills of coordination that they can do what is shown in this video. Good video, thanks for posting it.
