  • From all the movies I've seen in my entire life, this scene is one of my very favourites. You could think that nothing happens here, but the moment she says his name and everything stops, thats just magic. Also, one sentence is enough to make you understand there is a story behind with Hanzo and Bill that could worth a movie itself, and it's expressed in a couple seconds. I've heard (don't know if true) that sushi is actually bad in Okinawa, that means Hanzo opened his restaurant there so no one would go to see him.

I love the way she plays a naive, almost ditzy American then the tone changes drastically

"If you were general, I'd be EMPEROR!" What a slapback! This scene had me bawling with laughter.
  • This is legitimately one of the best scenes Tarentino has ever shot. The shifts in tempo and tone are so sudden yet seamless. Jarring but subtle. From when Beatrix ducks under them when they’re arguing, to her attempting to hide the fact that she speaks Japanese fluently... but there’s so much more. Hattori throwing the knife back on the shelf, keying you into his talents. It’s all top notch story telling. The sake bottle breaking in the back when she says that she’s looking for Hatori Hanzo (which tells you that his assistant is really paying attention and genuinely thought she was suspicious). This whole scene tells you SO much without any real exposition. You could write nearly a whole movie about Hatori from this one scene alone. Just a master class. And combined with the next scene... I mean wow. On the whole both Kill Bills, but especially volume 1, are more fun than great. But this 10 minute stretch should go on Q’s career highlight reel.

This scene has a spiritual feel to it

The best scene in the movie RIP Sonny Chiba

I don’t know why I always come back to this scene. It’s beautiful. I always wanted to wield a samurai 🗡.

I like how: after finding out the "vermin" was Bill, he not only took back his reluctance to give Bride a sword, he went and made a whole new one!
  • My dad and i used to watch this movie when i was young and told me not to tell my mom. But i wanted to watch it cause the fight scenes were cool and i wanted a samurai sword. lol Now as a adult, i got my sword and shared memories of watching Kill Bill with my father. We still watch both movies.

Three things I love about this scene. 1) Hattori Hanzo is a master class at flirting. 2) When she ducks under his arm, she totally gave herself away but they failed to spot it. Even though she dropped the role at that point. 3) The look on his face when the penny finally drops.

ill never forget seeing this in the movie theater and being the only one in the theater freaking out that sonny chiba was in the film

uma's performance of wonder and reverence for the swords really delivers the Hanzo reputation here and through the whole franchise
  • She plays the blonde American tourist so well even tho everytime he turns to yell at his assistant she laughs bc he's not looking at her and she can understand what he's saying the whole time, that's why I love the, "I'm not bald I shave" moment so much bc she laughs even tho she isn't suppose to know what he's saying buts it too funny not to laugh at

One of my favorite scenes in the movie. The tone immediately changes once she says: "Hattori Hanzo". Also, the dialogue! Hum! Top-notch! 😘😘😘

Here's a fun fact in the scene where he shows her his work, the swords All of them have the handles facing to the left, this is due to during times of War the handle would be facing out to the right making it easer and faster to draw in the case of an attack.

One of the things I love most about this scene is the choice to have her wear something that was SUPER tourist-y in the early 2000's - not just for Americans, but for Japanese people visiting Okinawa. There's a character in Azumanga Daioh that takes home a similar shirt as a souvenir in an issue published long before the movie came out.
  • @enargins
One of my all-time favorite parts from all movies. Just brilliant.
  • Wheb she says "hattori hanzo"..u can hear bald dude drop a bottle of sake in the background 😂
