Philippine Independence Day: The Philippine Flag and Philippine National Anthem

Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, the first President of the Philippine Republic declared our independence from Spanish rule on June 12, 1898 and during that time the Philippine flag was unfurled and the national anthem of the Philippines was public played for the first time in the town of Kawit, in the province of Cavite.
In 1897, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo designed the Filipino flag during his exile in Hong Kong. The Philippine flag was sewn by Marcela Agoncillo with the help of her daughter Lorenza and Mrs. Delfina Herbosa de Natividad (niece of the Philippine National Hero - Dr. Jose P. Rizal).
Our national flag has a white triangle containing the golden sun, with 8 rays and 3 five-pointed stars in each corner, a royal blue field and a crimson red field. The white triangle stands for equality and fraternity; the blue field symbolizes peace, truth and justice; and red field stands for patriotism and valor. The 8 rays of the golden sun represent the first 8 provinces that courageously defied and revolted against the Spaniards – Manila, Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Batangas, Laguna and our beloved province of Nueva Ecija. The three stars symbolize the three primary islands of the Philippines - Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Our national anthem was composed by Julian Felipe 1898 and the lyrics were adopted from the Spanish poem "Filipinas", written by José Palma in 1899. The present title of the national anthem of the Philippines is “Lupang Hinirang” which means “Chosen Land”.
