Overwatering Fig Trees: A Slow Decay of Your Fig Tree

Overwatering fig trees is the most common problem with young fig trees and new fig growers. Learning how much and when to water will give you the green thumb you've always wanted. Keep in mind, that it's not something you are born with. It's a skill. Learned from making repeated mistakes, figuring out what you did wrong, and not repeating the same mistake twice. I wasn't born with the plant version of parseltongue. I've killed many plants since I started and still do.

Setting up an irrigation system can help water fig trees reliably, accurately, and in the quantities you want. I would highly recommend setting one up. These are the products I use: www.amazon.com/shop/rossraddi/list/2JBE7T7BTQ4P?re…

To learn more about watering fig trees, check out the detailed companion guide to this video on the Fig Boss blog: www.figboss.com/post/fig-tree-watering-too-much-wa… & www.figboss.com/post/underwatering-fig-trees

The video discusses the issue of overwatering fig trees, emphasizing that high temperatures typically result in underwatering rather than overwatering. Yellowing leaves can indicate both overwatering and underwatering, but it's usually a lack of water during hot weather. Overwatering can lead to root rot, especially in waterlogged soil with poor aeration. Younger and more fragile trees are more susceptible to overwatering, while mature trees with many leaves quickly absorb water, making overwatering less likely.

Introduction (0:00):
Overview of overwatering fig trees and addressing common concerns.
Yellow Leaves (0:01):
Yellowing leaves indicate overwatering or underwatering.
Heat Impact (0:33):
High temperatures often mean lack of water, not overwatering.
Root Rot (1:10):
Overwatering can cause root rot in waterlogged soil.

Nutrient Loss (2:42):
Excessive watering can wash out soil nutrients.
Seasonal Concerns (3:15):
Overwatering is more likely in cooler weather with fewer leaves.
Young Trees (3:54):
Fragile young trees are more susceptible to overwatering.
Struggling Trees (4:29):
Trees with poor root systems are at higher risk of overwatering.

  • Thank you! Providing oxygen to your water means you need less water. Quality of water is important. Breath of fresh “water” lol : ) you rock fig boss!
  • @Detour4it
Your logic really helped put me at ease here down in Ocala, FL. 😉👍👊
  • Oh thank youn so much, taking care of a cousin's fig tree ,so worried cause we had some big ripe figs but now the rest are small and some are soft. and falling Very ,hot so will water a bit more
  • Thanks for the info Ross. I’m guessing mine was a mixture of both. I watered my large tree in a container from the hose prolly gave it way more thinking the soil would stay moist longer when in reality prolly gave it a couple gallons in a 20+ gallon pot and with extreme heat water logged soil the leaves curl in and die and fall off. I planted the tree in ground hope this brings it back around still has healthy leaves. This is my favorite pinache fig so hope it springs back.

Ya know, I've been transplanting up lately using Lowes tree & garden mix. Man.... whatva difference! I've got to water more often, but my transplants have gone wild vs. Using typical more expensive mixes.

My heavy clay soil retains water for 2 days without draining and started to rot the roots and yellow the leaves right away. I had to dry the roots out and move it to a pot. Hopefully it will recover.
  • Pick up the pot, if it’s too light, it needs water. After awhile you will know when and how much to water it.
  • "double bumps"? Elaborate/explain pls. Any thoughts on turning/rotating figs in pots? (good/bad/waste of time) Thanks!
  • In this video one can recognize yellowing leaf condition and find out if yellow leaves are from overwatering or under watering.

😂 The best bet is to use your fingers and dip down to the soil and see if it is wet, or use a wet/dry meter. I live in the zone 6a near the Philly. I worry about underwater instead of overwater
  • @kbrown9767
Thank you for the reassurance. I’ve had only one drastically dry out, luckily I caught it soon enough and I didn’t kill it or lose figs. But, I did put saucers under all my pots…is this a good or bad idea. Yes water does sit in them.
  • my trees get a lot of fruit but then start to drop fruit before they can get anything else but dryness inside. I am in Somers Point, NJ. Can you give me some advice. I have 5 trees that are about 5 years old and have sufficient space between each one (4-6 feet)
  • i water my plants such that i keep them moist not soaked
  • Seems like shorter wider pots would be more advantageous than taller more narrow pots, which is the opposite of what ive converted to in order to store more plants, unfortunately. It does seem that the bottom of these taller 5 gal pots are staying too moist, which parallels what you are saying
  • I have been doing this for the last 3-4 years with the same results and am just so frustrated with this issue. Can anyone give me an accurate answer??
