  • I love how a military outpost became a massive TRADE hub between worlds .... very in accordance to how many cities exist in history
  • @Jager1967
The fact that JSDF was smart enough to draw upon Earth military history and utilize the ideal layout of a 'Star Fortress' for their defensive bulwarks, speaks volumes to the professionalism of their combat engineers.

Man, GATE stands really high on my list of military anime, due to the fact that it actually shows the military being a competent and deadly force instead of being cannon fodder against medieval armies and magic. I'm so glad you did this! It's certainly unexpected, but welcome! ^^
  • @otavio8566
imagine if that gate appeared during imperial japan, this series age restriction would be drastically different
  • Holy crap! I never thought I’d see the Templin Institute doing an Anime location.
  • I really liked how the F-4 Phantom pilots just love flying around completely empty airspace doing whatever maneuvers they want while the commander on the ground scolds them for being showoffs and wasting jet fuel. It's an interesting show whose subtle details can be easily overlooked. FYI: most of the "sexy" "stuff" happens in season two but don't get your hopes up 'cause it's not really "vanilla" it's more like "BDS&M".

Politics aside, this anime, like Stargate SG-1, properly portrays a modern military that is actually trying to win a war.
  • "Gate" has always ranked high on my 'guilty pleasures' anime list. one of my favorite episodes is when the protagonist takes three of the 'natives' back to Japan to testify before the Diet. Rory lacing into the pompous member is absolutely priceless!
  • @SwiftGundam
This is a jaw dropper. Never would I have imagined GATE to get a video outta all possible anime. I liked the anime but having read the manga well before it came, I can't help but criticize the changes they made. Still would like a second season.
  • Japan-Wank or not, Gate is a fascinating concept, that honestly deserves a more in depth look like this.
  • @OtakuMeister
Man I miss this anime, it really needs to get another season
  • @CatHerderCam
"And thus the JSDF fought there" I see what you did there.
  • @Shinzon23
man do I ever wish the anime had another season. Its quirky but fun to watch
  • One thing I love about the GATE Manga, is the fact that it actually evolves into a sort of political drama, with the Japanese government attempting to stabilise the region, by propping up the legitimate government against the Princes insurgents while pressure from home demands the troops return at the same time forces abroad call for access to the GATE to be shared with other nations. This kind of setting isn't really explored as much in fiction, much less anime/manga, which is why it's such a standout for me. I can draw a lot of parallels with the story of Gate to the tales of places like Afghanistan and Iraq, where the conventional fighting is largely one sided and over swiftly, but the problem of insurgency and political turmoil in the aftermath causes most of the heartache.

I liked how they used the classic star shape fortress for the design of the base. Considering the weapons technology of the other world. The design with anti-air weaponry is well suited for defense.
  • When watching this anime, something always bugged me, how Japan called the lands beyond the Gate as "The Special Administrative Region OF JAPAN" and my thought was. 'wait so you passed a law in the Japanese Diet that essentially annexed an entire world/reality?' and you wonder why the Americans, Russians, and Chinese are eyeing you with suspicion as to your intentions ?
  • GATE was an interesting premise that I wish more anime and fiction used. Modern Earth is mundane, but full of military super powers of incredible might. To see armies of Earth fight the mystical wilds and slaver nations of other worlds provides is interesting, especially seeing how the powers of Earth react to nations and peoples of a world that is truly new.
  • @jeremy1860
I've only seen a few brief clips of this anime, but I have to say the idea of a modern-day military going to the past (or something like it) and showing old-school armies what's what actually sort of intrigues me 😊
  • @JunkPhuJP
I love how the refugees of Alunus at first thought they were going to have to "do unspeakable things" in order to survive living there, and then the JSDF was like, "So we killed some dragons. Like a lot of dragons. And we've already decided we don't need anything from them. Would they be useful for you?" "OMG, dragon scales are like super valuable here! And you don't want anything in return?!" Then they go to Italica’s trader and goes "So the JSDF just saved your city from bandits. We'd like the special rate. Here are bags and bags full of dragon scales." "Holy shit we literally don't have enough money." "Then you can make up the difference with information."
