Another awesome thing that is never said is the reason why the lizards never bit Stanley or Zero is bc it was revealed earlier in a flashback that the yellow spotted lizards don’t like the onions Sam has and that’s all the two boys ate on the mountain ! This movie and all its tiny details was amazing

Digging a hole is easy. Digging a hole in the heat is something else.

Another thing that connected them was that the solution to the "smelly feet" problem was the Peaches and Onions, both of which Kissing Kate and Merchant Sam exchanged.

Wow, I remember watching this so many times as a kid. Makes me want to watch it all over again.
  • So fun fact, there are actually many prisons like this with now walls or fences or anything. Quite a few pristine use nature as their only wall

Imagine finding out about this as an adult after reading the book based on which this was made as a child. Never knowing this was filmed. Seems like I'll watch it with my kids now.

13:44 “Grandpa I’m tired!” “WELL THATS TO DAMN BAD, YOU KEEP DIGGING”

I absolutely love such movies in which obscure stories of ancestors and the mistakes made by them are connected to the people of today and how they solve those mistakes. This story really gave the important message that every cloud has a silver lining, ie, every bad has some good. Stanley the fourth finally took off the curse from his family.

I would very much recommend reading the book this is based on, ‘Holes’ it is an amazing book, also the sequel ‘Small Steps’ is very good. For the most part, everything by Louis Sachar is good and worth a read.

That seems like a pretty nice childrens movie, from back when childrens movies had an actually interesting and decent plot.
  • Shia LaBeouf has ALWAYS been extremely gifted in acting, regardless of how anyone feels about his personal life. From Even Stevens to Holes to Fury to Padre Pio.

The "Sam carrying Frodo" moment! 🙂👍
  • I think everyone in my country had to study Holes in seventh grade. Me and my brother still quote this movie daily lol

I almost got my degree in all movie recaps 😂
  • If u read the book Stanley’s family was cursed by madame zeroni because Stanley Yelnats the 1st did not carry madame zeroni up the mountain but zero is a descendent of madame zeroni and Stanley yelnats the 4th carried a descendent of madame zeroni up the mountain so that’s how the curse was broken and things went back to normal

im not a soft guy but movies like this sometimes melt my heart and im glad they do
  • @SAmaryllis
Thank you for the summary! I read the book ages ago but never watched the movie, so I'm glad I was able to see this recap
  • I’m sorry to be that one nitpicker, the video is great overall, but there are some serious facts you got wrong. The first one is the kid in the opening that got bit by the snake didn’t die. It’s not clear if he died in the hospital at any point or not but all they did say when Stanley arrived was he wouldn’t be returning because he was still in the hospital. Next, when you said that Sam lost his mule so he had to get a boat. That is most certainly not true. I don’t know if you said that for censorship but what actually happened was after the town found out about the interracial relationship between Sam and Kate, not only was the school burned down, but there was a manhunt for him. We saw him try escaping on his boat, which he actually had prior to his mule, Mary Lou Dying, and she was actually killed by that mob. This happened moments before Sam was shot while he was fleeing. And third zero didn’t ask if there were stars on the shoes he asked if there were red X’s.

I remember watching the movie and reading the book in public school. Such a gem.
