Sprinters who step out of the blocks instead of push out of the blocks don't run fast times. Here is what stepping out looks like and how to fix it.

...back in the day, I NEVER had a decent coach tell me any of this! Wow! I was largely self-taught and managed to take 1st place at my school's Region's Track & Field Meet in the 110m high hurdles my senior year. I essentially through Trial & Error had to figure out my cadence of 6 steps out of blocks to 1st hurdle, THEN 1-2-3-KICK! then repeat until over last hurdle! I LOVE the hurdles to this day! I got to the State meet that senior year, but was not competitive enough. Great memories though ;) Wish you were my coach back in the day!

"1,2,3 take a nap, eat a sandwich, you're out of the final" LOL! Classic Latif.

In reality you have to find the right position for you through trial and error. I have always had bad starts since high school and now as a senior in college, I think I have finally found the right starting position for my body type. One tip I can give is to get into the set position without blocks and if you feel comfortable in that set position, match the block pedals with the position of your feet. So yes have block next to you when you get into the set position and match the distance from the line to your front and back block exactly as your feet were in the set position. From there make any adjustments.
  • thank you so much! i know what i must do now to improve my block start. my back is hunched over, and my shoulders are way in front of my hands/four arm. when i'm in the set position my head and shoulders are ling over the line. and of yes, i'm stepping out of the blocks! i had a friend take a video of my start one day so i compared it to the teachings of this video. i basically was the male version of her. i'm glad i could try to get better before season comes around, thank you.

the whole attack the ground/ dont wait for it thing sounds pretty common sense but might actually be part of whats wrong with my start
