"Take all your chances while you can..."

The day started cold and wet but by mid morning the clouds dissipated and it warmed up under blue skies. Scenery was spectacular as usual and I had a most glorious view of Mount Adams rising above the clouds. Unfortunately, I had no clue what I was getting into with traversing the Goat Rocks. A southbound hiker gave me good info and advised me that the lower route (the PCT) crossed three dangerous, steep snow chutes, and the higher alternate route was snow-free. I was going to take the high route but when I arrived at the first snow field I stupidly decided to cross it and take my chances traversing the Packwood Glacier. Idiot! It didn't take long for me to regret my decision. By the time I finished, my nerves were shot and my stomach was upset, and to tell the truth- I was genuinely scared of losing my footing and sliding down the mountain out of control. But I made it. After the snow fields, I followed the narrow ridge line to Elk Pass and finally started making the descent to friendlier surroundings. By the end of the day, I was exhausted and relieved. It never felt so good to crawl into my tent to decompress and rest.

wow, another rough one. One minute beautiful meadows, next terrifying steep snow crossings. You always pick some great music, too.

@7:50 I now understand why they named it the pacific CREST trail. Thank you, Captain Dan.

I love Goat Rocks Wilderness. We hiked up to Old Snowy from the south with a group of Scouts. In the morning, the first snowfield we came to was hard ice. Fortunately I had an old, wooden shafted ice ax I used as a walking stick and we were able to cut steps across. Still, pretty nerve wracking with eight kids and no rope.
  • @otway00

Loved the outro Dan. Justed subbed and look forward to future videos. I start NOBO on the AT in 17 days. Will be vloging as well. Good luck brother.

Evertime I see you walk away I keep thinking about the camera, which is not going to come after you, obviously, so you need to retrace your steps and go back to fetch it. And then actually walk away, again. Just for us to enjoy the scenery even more, even if it takes you longer, and doing these triple PCT parts. I do appreciate it! But the effort, wow.

2015: took the lower snowfield route like u. Good boot track across. 2022: took old snowy route. No snow up top but descending thru all the flat moveable rocks down to the Knife Edge was a slow “pita”. Pick ur poison 😂

I would like to thank you very much for making an excellent video. You have a different perspective on the trail and that was one thing that I really appreciate. I really like how you show where you're going and where you came from. It really makes us feel like we're hiking with you. Thank you for sharing your videos I'm a subscriber now. Can't wait to see the whole PCT trip I will be watching them all.
