The political leader of the Islamist Hamas, Ismail Haniya, is said to have been killed by a bomb explosion in Iran, according to a media report. The explosive device was allegedly placed in a guest house for Iranian state guests two months before Haniya's trip to Tehran, the New York Times reported, citing seven officials from the Middle East region, including two Iranians and a US government official.
Haniya was the victim of an attack in Tehran on Wednesday night. Hamas and Iran accuse Israel of being responsible. Israel has not yet officially responded to the accusations. The Hamas leader was in Tehran for the swearing-in of the new Iranian President Massoud Peseschkian. A few hours before his death, he was received by the Iranian revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The New York Times further reported that the bomb was activated remotely. The attackers are said to have previously convinced themselves that Haniya was in his room. A bodyguard also died in the attack. Haniya had already stayed in the guesthouse, which is protected by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, on previous visits to Tehran.
Nevertheless, the attackers apparently managed to exploit security gaps in the Iranian military apparatus and smuggle a bomb into the well-secured building. The explosive device remained undiscovered for several weeks. According to Iranian officials, this represents a catastrophic failure of the Iranian secret services and an enormous embarrassment for the Revolutionary Guard.
A few hours before Haniya's death in Tehran, Israel had killed Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut. The Shiite militia Hezbollah in Lebanon is allied with Iran, as is the Palestinian Hamas. Tehran and Hezbollah threatened massive retaliation after the attacks. Observers fear that the escalation could trigger a larger war in the region.
