Master Hsu Yun or Xuyun (Chinese: ่™šไบ‘; - name meaning "Empty Cloud) born 5 September 1840 โ€“ 13 October 1959 was a renowned Chinese Chan Buddhist master and one of the most influential Buddhist teachers of the 19th and 20th centuries. According to Richard Hunn, Master Hsu is "Universally regarded as the most outstanding Buddhist of the Chinese order in the modern era."

When Xuyun was seventeen, he attempted to flee home to Mount Heng to become a monk without his family's permission. On a winding mountain path he encountered envoys sent by his uncle to intercept and escort him back. His aspiration was not realized and he was reproved and brought back home. His father formally arranged brides for him, and his marriage was completed. Although they lived together, Xuyun did not have sexual contact with his wives. Moreover, he extensively explained the dharma to the women so that they too would practice Buddhism. He left them this profound teaching "The Song of the Skinbag" which he wrote at the age of 19. Several years later Maser Hsu discovered that his two former wives had both ordained as bhikshunis (nuns).

During his years as a hermit, Xuyun made some of his most profound discoveries. He visited the old master Yung Ching, who encouraged him to abandon his extreme asceticism in favor of temperance. He instructed the young monk in the sutras and told him to be mindful of the Hua Tou, "Who is dragging this corpse of mine?"
Master Hsu lived to the grand old age of 120.

He lived 119 years. And so many of those years with a quiet, well-trained mind. He will be an inspiration for 100s if not 1000s of years.
  • Great way to share Zen . Not analyzing it to death. Just recite , and let people work it out for themelves...as intended.
  • Cannot thank you enough! Your podcasts are my solace when waking up in the middle of nights due to insomnia. In fact, I enjoy them so much, I kinda welcome the insomnia!
  • Empty cloud was born in a caul or embryonic sack. His mother though he was dead but a passing medicine man cut him out of it and he lived. That is the origin of this early poem.He was horribly beaten in the 50's by the red guard, in an attempt to rob him, but he had nothing - he was then over 110 years old. He died at 119 during the famines caused by Mao - he gave most of his food to the starving. He was a enlightened master who was at his death the head of Chinese Buddhism. My friend and teacher when I was a kid was ordained by him so I heard many stories -
